About the Library

Housed in the Riddell Library and Learning Centre, the University Library is an integral part of the MRU experience. The services, facilities, programming and expertise available in the Library support innovative teaching, learning, and scholarship across campus. The Library includes the Archives and Special Collections, and specialized and technology-enriched teaching and learning spaces, including information literacy classrooms, a Maker Studio, audio production rooms, and a range of visualization, simulation, and immersive spaces.

About the Role

The Public Services Assistant, Maker Studio provides one-to-one instruction, assisting and teaching library users in the safe and effective use of a range of Maker Studio tools, technology and other learning technologies. Additionally, this role is responsible for teaching and assisting Library users (students, staff, faculty, and community members) with a range of research-related tasks, skills, and knowledge in support of their academic work and their information needs.

This position is a full time (35 hours per week on-campus, working Monday to Friday) 12 month replacement term position commencing on April 8, 2024, with the possibility of extension. If the previous incumbent in your position returns prior to the end of your term, Mount Royal University may choose to adjust the length of your term.

Responsibilities

Maker Studio Technical and Safety Support and Training

  • Provide formal and informal training (including required safety and risk mitigation training) for students, staff, faculty and community in the use of the Library’s Maker Studio technology, tools, equipment and in the use of other Library technology as assigned
  • Assist in the development and updating of handouts, how-to guides, safety training and other training materials
  • Train / instruct users in the Maker Studio, including the use of specialized software, tools, equipment, and technology made available by the Library
  • Assist with research, and implementation of Maker Studio related tools, technologies and equipment
  • Conduct regular maintenance and repair of all Maker Studio tools, technologies and equipment, including maintaining a directory of warranty and replacement schedules
  • Maintain the Maker Studio facility to ensure it remains in clean, safe working order, maintaining health and safety records (including reporting, safe disposal of materials, MSDS)
  • Maintain currency and awareness in safety and risk mitigation for the Maker Studio and compliance with Maker Studio and institutional procedures and policies

Assist Library Users

  • Performs reference interviews to respond to, identify, assess, and clarify information needs of Library users
  • Provides one-to-one instruction and assistance to Library users, in virtual and physical environments, to help them effectively access and use print and electronic resources to meet their information needs
  • Maintains expertise in a range of information resources, databases, subject areas, and in searching and evaluation skills
  • Works as part of a team to provide efficient, timely information and referrals to Library users
  • Processes materials and equipment, including course reserves materials, to make items available to Library users

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree complemented by experience working in a Public Services environment.
  • Experience working with a variety of digital and analog fabrication tools and technologies including 3D printing, carving and cutting, scanning, sewing, etc is required for work in the Maker Studio. Safety training is required but will be provided (WHMIS) as needed.
  • Experience in a Maker Studio or maker space environment.
  • Experience providing support and training with several of the following tools, technologies and equipment: 3D printing, carving, sewing, cutting, drawing, 3D modeling, electronics, robotics and micro computing.
  • The incumbent must be conversant with the information needs of post-secondary students across all disciplines in the institution and must have an understanding of the nature of the instructional mission of Mount Royal.

Preferred

  • Library Information Technology (LIT) diploma would be a strong asset.
  • Experience in a library or educational environment (academic is an asset)
