Position: Radiation Protection and Active Waste Technician
Employment Type: Permanent
Location: Tiverton, Ontario
Department: Ontario Nuclear Services
Reports to: Radiation Protection Supervisor
Hours per week: 40 (This is a shift worker position. Shift workers may be assigned to work 8,10 and/or 12-hour shift schedules, may include days, afternoons, nights and may be rotating shifts. Overtime, field, and weekend work may be required.)

Accountabilities: How you will make an impact

Radiation Protection Duties:

  • Ensure that the entire facility is in compliance with radiation safety standards and protocols by performing checks/audits and then implementing the necessary items as per the Rad Protection Procedures (RPP) or by direction from the RPS.
  • Perform routine dose rate and contamination surveys of entire site using the supplied checklist as per the RPP or non-routine surveys by direction from the RPS.
  • Be able to use of a variety of standard radiation measuring equipment for detection of alpha, beta (including tritium and Carbon-14), and gamma.
  • Maintain the inventory of Radiation Protection equipment including coordinating or performing repairs and calibrations to ensure that Radiation Protection equipment is available on demand
  • Assist with routine bioassay collection and analysis
  • Collect, analyze, and report all RP sampling data and information to the RPS
  • Perform minor repairs and troubleshoot RP instrumentation
  • Be a RAM shipper/receiver for the Plant

Active Waste Duties:

  • Implement the radioActive Waste program by collecting, storing, packaging, characterizing, and coordinating transportation and disposal of all radioActive Waste streams from the facility according to the procedures.
  • Using procedures, perform sampling, monitoring, and performance checks on the Active Liquid Waste System
  • Using procedures, ensure all effluent streams from the facility are sampled as per the required schedule and that all samples are analyzed (ether by self in the chemistry lab or by shipping to the Kinectrics Kipling Lab)
  • Collect and analyze all chemistry and waste data and information for reporting to the RPS/RSO
  • Assist with changing pre-filters and HEPAs using standard procedures and coordinate their disposal
  • Perform surveys to ensure material can be released or disposed as non-radioActive Waste; or classify and segregate the material to disposed through the right radioActive Waste disposal pathway.
  • Ensure contaminated materials are properly bagged and maintain the facility to be free of loose contamination.
  • Assisting with minimizing and optimizing the active materials inventory

Laboratory duties:

  • Perform radiological and/or chemical analysis on all effluent, environmental, and field samples and recorded under specified system
  • Maintain the laboratory equipment are in working order by ensuring they are calibrated, perform daily quality control check, and report if test results exceed the expected value threshold.
  • Maintain the inventory of laboratory supplies.
  • Assist with operation for discharge calculation and approval.

Generally:

  • Follow Kinectrics work procedures, particularly all Radiation Protection Procedures / Radiation Safety Work Instructions
  • Prepare and maintain complete, accurate, timely, concise and legible records of all radioactive material handling and safety compliance activities, consistent with Kinectrics policies and procedures.
  • Perform all duties in a safe manner in compliance with Kinectrics policies and procedures
  • Participate in continuous improvement or process improvement initiatives regarding Radiation Protection or the radiation laboratories.
  • Be willing to support initiatives to change behaviours around Radiation Protection
  • Respiratory protection may be required based on assigned work.
  • Have an excellent attendance record
  • Be a positive contributor within a high performing team and to a positive team environment
  • Work well with others and have the ability to develop, maintain and foster positive work relationships
  • Ability to obtain and maintain successful OPG and/or Bruce Power Security Clearance(s).
  • Other duties as required.

What you need to succeed:

  • Completion of post-secondary degree/diploma
  • Minimum 3 years relevant experience
  • Demonstrated experience using monitors for detecting gamma, beta, alpha, and tritium, including dose rate and loose, fixed and airborne contamination surveying.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork and organizational skills.
  • Transport of Dangerous Goods Class 7 shipment knowledge and experience is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of chemistry and laboratory experience is considered an asset.
  • OPG and Bruce Power site clearance and Radiation Protection qualification is considered an asset
