Job description

Reports to: Project Manager

Location: Port Hope

Functional Manager: Health Physicist

Main Purpose of Job:

  • Supervise Remediation and Delineation/Characterization crews of Radiation Protection Technicians in the field.
  • Ensuring procedural and regulatory compliance.
  • Attend daily plan and progress meetings.
  • Prepare reports presenting details of investigations, together with conclusions and recommendations. Transmit results of discussion to management were pertinent.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of corrective actions implemented as a result of investigations, audits, etc.
  • Monitor implementation of plans and procedures in the filed.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Supervise the Radiation Protection Technicians (RPT) and together with the Health Physicist administer the resources on the shift.
  • Attend daily pre and post job briefings.
  • Plan, organize, prioritize, and coordinate work programs together with the Health Physicist.
  • Maintain quality, accuracy and quantity of service and personnel performance.
  • Monitor implementation of plans and procedures in the field, and ensuring the sites and tasks are in compliant with the RP program.
  • Provide advice, guidance, instruction, and direction to Radiation Protection Technicians.
  • Review and suggest improvement to procedures, training manuals and training materials.
  • Discuss technical requirements with Health Physicist and supervisory personnel.
  • Ensure adherence to radiation control regulations, giving direction and guidance to Radiation Protection Technicians (RPT) staff, contract personnel, and visitors, as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with appropriate personnel in the devising of work methods for the safe continuation of operations and ensuring compliance with dose limits.
  • Initiate and evaluate radiation emergency practices and drills.
  • Advise Health Physicist and/or other supervisory staff of any safety concerns, radiological or otherwise, due to deficiencies in equipment, facilities, or methods.
  • Devise and recommend new or revised procedures to ensure adherence to all regulations.
  • Make recommendations regarding the methods, equipment or facilities that may eliminate, or minimize hazards.
  • Locate or relocate monitoring equipment as determined by observation of systems operation and as per approved procedures.
  • Investigate minor incidents and participate in investigations of major incidents.
  • Determine any violation of regulations or instructions or deficiencies in equipment, procedures, or training.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of field procedures and recommend improvements or addition.
  • Determine effectiveness of Radiation Protection and characterization equipment and recommend improvements or additions.
  • Attend safety meetings and/or other information sessions and explain the project’s Radiation Protection practices.
  • Other duties required by the job necessity.

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Extensive knowledge in the principles of Radiation Protection.
  • Strong Leadership skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Experience managing filed crews.
  • Able to travel occasionally.

Desired:

  • Working knowledge of Radiation Protection and monitoring instrumentation.
  • Project Management Experience.
  • Knowledge of HR and labour relations practices Prior experience in a senior supervisory role.

Special Features of the Job

  • Field work can involve temperature extremes and precautions will be taken when this is the case. Ability to stand upright and walk outdoors (sometimes in rugged terrain). Some limited working at heights may be required.
  • Must be capable of wearing PPE, including respirators if required.
  • Occasional travel within Canada required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain necessary site security clearance.
  • Have and maintain a valid class G driver’s license.

Job Type: Full-time

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday

Supplemental pay types:

  • Overtime pay

  • Port Hope, ON: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
