Plains is currently looking to fill the position of Rail Operator at our process plant located in Fort Saskatchewan, AB. While reporting to the Team Lead, Rail, you will develop and excel in a team environment and be responsible for contributing to the safe, efficient, and reliable operations of the facility. Rotating 12-hour day and night shifts are required to accommodate 24-hour operations.

Permanent residency within 120 km of the Plains Fort Saskatchewan facility is a condition of employment and preference will be given to local candidates.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring adherence to safety standards in accordance with company policy and legislated requirements.
  • Verifying tank car numbers with loading instructions to ensure accurate placement of cars.
  • Inspecting exterior of rail cars prior to and after loading, and prior to shipping, as per TDG requirements.
  • Connecting, disconnecting, gauging, and sealing LPG rail cars as the loading process requires.
  • Performing rail yard switching operations required to position railcars at various stages of the operation.
  • Interacting with CN and PMC staff regarding receipt, inspection, and shipment of railcars.
  • Positioning rail cars for loading, unloading, repairs and shipment.
  • Inspecting and operating a rail car mover to meet daily rail yard requirements.
  • Performing routine inspections of the rail yard equipment (track and switches) and reporting defects.
  • Assisting outside vendors in matters dealing with rail car requirements (repairs, inspections, etc.).
  • Performing mechanical troubleshooting for respective loading equipment; pump and valve maintenance; safety system testing; and periodic inspection/calibration of equipment.
  • Understanding flow rates of product in conjunction with car loading and movement in order to meet daily loading requirements.
  • Other duties as required to support activities within area or other areas as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Grade 12 education
  • Previous loading or rail operations experience preferred
  • Able to read and interpret P&IDs considered an asset
  • Strong safety orientation
  • Able to lift 50 lbs., climb stairs / ladders / work at heights, and work outside in inclement weather conditions on a routine basis
  • Strong safety orientation
  • Ability to recognize problems, collect data, and establish facts in order to draw valid conclusions
  • Able to calculate figures and amounts relate to proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume confidently and accurately
  • Self-starter with a strong sense of responsibility and ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications, including Word, Excel, and outlook
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work rotating shifts (days and nights)
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean abstract
  • Cleared criminal history (background) and satisfactory reference checks
  • Cleared pre-employment rail medical fit test
  • Compliance with the Plains drug and alcohol policy including pre-employment D&A testing
