Are you ready to cultivate groundbreaking discoveries in agriculture? Kent Ag Research Inc. is looking for a dedicated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Research Associate. The successful candidate will play an integral role in supporting our research efforts and ensuring the accurate implementation of planting, harvesting and related agriculture activities. You will work closely with a small team to design, conduct, analyze, gather data and contribute to the development of innovative solutions for the agriculture industry. This position is offering full time employment.
Responsibilities include:
- Assist in organizing trials and setup.
- Assist in packaging seed and place in planting order with a high degree of accuracy in accordance to planting lists and maps provided.
- Be able to select quality land that meets research standards and accurately measure plot areas using ATV GPS technology.
- Assist in preseason planter calibration and setup.
- Travel to exterior locations in Ontario and Quebec to be an essential part of a planting team, including the ability to operate a planter and participate in troubleshooting.
- Participate in general plot maintenance with ATV and backpack sprayers.
- Collect stand counts on corn, using drone technology, with a minor amount of hand counting and accurately enter data collected into a database.
- Lead summer help in general plot weeding, minor hoeing, breeder plot rogueing, signage and staking for plot tours.
- Assist preharvest preparation, combine calibration, organize sample tags and bags.
- Accurately record observations and field inspections to assess crop factors including soybean maturity and corn lodging.
- Be able to assist in combine/silage harvester operation and harvest including corn silage, yield trials, nursery, and breeder plots.
- Enter data from various sources into our database systems with high accuracy and efficiency.
- General equipment maintenance, minor repair, following service schedules and completing accurate service logs.
- Equipment washing, general shop, shed, office cleanup.
- Adhere to company safety policies and participate in quarterly meetings.
Qualifications include:
- Diploma, degree, or certificate in agriculture, agronomy, soil/plant science or related discipline
- Previous field research experience would be considered a strong asset.
- Previous experience with operating farm equipment would be considered as an asset, but not essential.
- High degree attention to detail and can problem solve.
- Be reliable and punctual. Possess a high level of initiative. Be a strong team player.
- Enjoy working outdoors and able to work long hours during peak times. Regular work week is 40hrs.
- Able to travel to exterior locations and overnight stays (approx. 15 nights/yr)
- Possess strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office programs.
- Able to obtain pesticide safety course.
- Interested in learning and obtaining drone pilot certificate, and other technologies, including Trimble GPS, and planter programs.
- Hold a valid class G drivers license and clean drivers abstract. Willing to tow cargo trailer with pickup truck to locations.
- Have the ability to work independently efficiently with accuracy or within a group setting with team members.
