Job description

Location: Calgary, Edmonton, AB
Employment Type: Full Time, Limited Term - Anticipated duration 12 months
Salary Range: SP3, Level 5, $88,792 - $110,990 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
Reservoir Engineer, In Situ Subsurface – Hybrid
The Opportunity
The In Situ Applications Approvals team is looking for a Reservoir Engineer with regulatory experience in Alberta and wants to be an integral part of the Alberta Energy Regulator’s (AER) decisions in the in situ sector. If you are motivated to be part of a team that strongly emphasizes continuous improvement, builds an inclusive and equitable culture, and makes risk-informed recommendations based on technical evidence, then this position may be the next step in your career.
As a Reservoir Engineer you will provide technical guidance, support, and evaluation for in situ applications that ultimately inform decisions made under the Oil Sands Conservation Act (OSCA) and Oil and Gas Conservation Act (OGCA). It requires interacting with other technical professionals, looking at proposals holistically, liaising with applicants, clearly articulating risks associated with each application and making recommendations to the leadership team.
What your day-to-day will look like:
  • As part of a multi-disciplinary team, review and make recommendations on applications for new and existing in situ developments, including drafting of case-specific approval conditions for the Reservoir Engineering components and subsurface impacts. This may require the involvement of other technical disciplines demonstrating the use of basic project management techniques and acting as the primary liaison with industry, government, and other external stakeholders.
  • Apply risk-based technical review principles while ensuring application timeline targets are met.
  • Liaise with representatives from industry, the public and government during the application review process, including but not limited to regulatory requirements associated with in situ oil sands developments.
  • Support post-application technical reviews (desktop surveillance) to ensure operational risks associated with development have been mitigated through the compliance and assurance mechanisms in place. This includes the review of Directive 054 presentations, operational performance reports, and technical support on conditions management.
What we're looking for in you:
  • Bachelor’s degree in petroleum or chemical engineering along with 5-7 years of related experience in Reservoir Engineering or related oil and gas field of study within the in-situ sector.
  • All applicants must be registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
  • Familiar with Alberta's regulatory framework and associated legislation and enactments, particularly OSCA, and how they apply to various application scenarios.
  • A collaborator who believes in the importance of building strong relationships, teamwork, fostering a positive organizational culture, and has strong interpersonal skills to present and communicate technical information to a variety of audiences.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to assess technical and regulatory risks and present conclusions in the form of recommendations to decision makers.
Additional Information:
  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
  • Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.
  • If you need accommodation during any stage of the recruitment process, please email
    Peopleservices@aer.ca
. Information relating to the need for accommodation and accommodation measures will be addressed confidentially.
What we offer you:
  • Great benefits from your first day of work
  • Flexible Work Program - hybrid work and flexible hours
  • Generous vacation entitlement and flex days
