SUMMARY OF POSITION
Under the direction of the Manager, the Supervisor, Retirement Home, is responsible for the day-to-day supervision, provision, and coordination of care to residents according to the Carefor policies and procedures. The Supervisor collaborates with members of the Carefor program teams in meeting individual needs to attain optimal level of independence and wellbeing.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Oversees and assists the Manager with the overall operation and performance of the Carefor staff supporting resident care
- Identifies and delegates appropriate duties to staff, with appropriate support and follow-up, including Infection Prevention & Control Training, KnowBe4 Cyber Security training, etc.
- Acts as a resource, support and mentor to the staff and provides coaching, education, and instruction to encourage them to attain individual and operational performance objectives
- Contributes to human resources management, including labour and employee relations, discipline, health and safety, continuing education, professional development, recognition of staff and orientation, as required
- Completes performance reviews on assigned staff and identifies and discusses with the Manager employee issues which require disciplinary action
- Assists Manager and Human Resources in employee recruitment process, anticipates and monitors staffing needs, and initiates appropriate action to obtain/maintain an adequate compliment of staff
- Partakes in crisis prevention and management, as required
- Acts as a resource for staff and volunteers to provide support and assistance when necessary
- Documents and follows-up all incidents, occurrences, concerns and priorities in a timely manner, as required by Program policies, regulations and/or standards.
- Coordinates and completes the admission process for new residents and ensures that each resident undergoes the appropriate admission process within the timeframe allotted
Operational and Organizational Responsibilities:
- Influences policy review and development of quality standards and best practice
- Leads by example and promotes continuous quality improvement
- Understands, promotes, and communicates the value, purpose, and relationship of retirement facility programs to Carefor
- Evaluates processes and implements strategies to increase efficiencies
- Planning, monitoring and coordinating purchasing for the home including dietary supplies, PPE, Medical Supplies, office supplies to carry out the functions of the program
- Develops written plans of care, in consultation with program team, resident and/or family, for each resident
- Evaluates care and services and updates service plans based on assessment of resident’s progress
- Provides assistance and/or delegates to other Carefor team members to provide safe, resident-directed health care and support services
- Provides direct client care as needed which may include coverage of open shifts if staff unavailable.
- Must be available on-call, after hours and for other duties as assigned
- Supervises and teaches delegated tasks to staff members, where appropriate
- Supervises, orders, carries out quarterly reviews on medication and communicates with pharmacy
- Assists the Manager in developing schedules, staff replacement and changes in coverage as needed
- Coordinates, participates in, and supervises the provisions of on-site support services
- Anticipates and monitors staffing needs and initiates appropriate action to obtain/maintain an adequate compliment of staff in consultation with the program manager
- Schedule, plan and lead staff meetings within Program
Health and Safety Responsibilities:
- Operates within and monitors individual, staff, and program compliance to Occupational Health and Safety Legislation, standards, and Carefor Policies & Procedures
- Participates in health and safety training, including WHMIS, and applies this knowledge
- Completes mandatory Health & Safety orientation with new and/or returning employees
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, CREDENTIALS
- Minimum of 5 years as a Registered Practical Nurse in the Province of Ontario
- Experience or education with Alzheimer’s, other related dementias, geriatric health, and mental illness
- Knowledge of RHRA legislation and regulations’, CPI, GPA, and Best Friends Approach an asset
- Previous experience working with unregulated care providers in a supervisory role, as a team leader and/or charge person or related education preferred
- Advanced communication skills (both verbal and written), and an understanding of effective communication tools
- Experience with basic scheduling and attendance management/recording using HRIS systems (i.e. Quadrant) is an asset
- Ability to plan, schedule, monitor, delegate and evaluate
- Ability to read, interpret and apply Carefor policy & procedures, client care plans, program manuals and other related regulations and standards
- Knowledge of and basic computer skills using the following: Email, Microsoft Word, Excel and other HRIS systems
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to manage multiple priorities
- Highly developed organizational and interpersonal skills
- Bilingualism in French and English an asset
Hours of Work: 75 hrs bi-weekly,
Hours and days of the week may change based on the needs of the programs.
