About the Opportunity

Standen's has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Safety Manager, Manufacturing, based in Calgary, AB.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Human Resources, you will lead and oversee safety programs, ensuring the implementation of safety measures and the management of our safety team.

In this position, you will be primarily responsible for leading the small safety team and driving the successful execution of safety programs, including hazard management, incident investigation, compliance, and proactive safety initiatives to prevent accidents and occupational hazards.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Investigating incidents, near misses, and occupational diseases to determine causes and establish preventive measures
  • Reviewing and analyzing statistical data from investigations, inspections, and environmental testing for comprehensive reporting, regulatory compliance, and safety enhancements
  • Staying updated on policies, regulations, and industrial processes
  • Inspecting facilities, machinery, safety equipment, and new machinery specifications to identify and rectify potential hazards, ensuring compliance
  • Coordinating and conducting worker safety training, as well as new employee orientations, to instill safety best practices in the workplace
  • Conducting and coordinating testing, including industrial hygiene research, to verify compliance with health and safety regulations and align with safety objectives
  • Chairing safety meetings and overseeing safety audits to ensure compliance with standards
  • Providing health and safety mentoring, coaching, and support to internal and external clients
  • Maintaining workplace visibility, engaging with associates, and supporting day-to-day operations
  • Establishing and maintaining an H&S system meeting or exceeding Certificate of Recognition (COR) requirements
  • Collaborating with the Purchasing department to evaluate and coordinate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements
  • Implementing a hazard management tool for employees, incorporating streamlined workflows and tracking systems to promptly address and resolve complaints

More About You

To qualify for this role, you will ideally have 5+ years of progressive management experience with 7+ years in a Safety role, preferably in manufacturing. Candidates with fewer years of experience but possessing the required skills are encouraged to apply.

The following skills and experience will be strong attributes:

  • Proficiency in trend identification and the development of preventive safety measures and initiatives
  • Capability to offer coaching, conflict resolution, and support to the Human Resources team in matters related to safety and compliance
  • Established experience in change management and implementation of systems
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation concerning workplace safety in Alberta, BC, Ontario
  • Familiarity with ISO 14001 standards and relevant legislative requirements in the safety domain
  • Capacity to multitask efficiently and work under pressure while managing various safety-related tasks concurrently
  • Demonstrated strong written communication skills in the development of professional emails and documentation
  • Demonstrated capability of creating workflows and procedures
  • Proven technical and computer literacy
  • A Bachelor's degree (asset)
