Position Summary
Reporting to the Supervisors of Public Works Operations, the Seasonal Labourer will be responsible for a variety of maintenance activities throughout the City.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Parks:
Ground maintenance: including mowing, trimming activities
Sports field maintenance including lining, tilling, turf cutting, and various amenity repairs to sports fields
Assist staff in the inspection, cleaning and repair of multiple park amenities e.g. playgrounds, splash pads and picnic shelters
After hours park patrol and daily maintenance of our destination parks
Horticultural maintenance: including planting, weeding and maintenance of annual, perennial and shrub beds along with other horticultural displays
Operate various hand tools and powered equipment, including a pickup truck (minimum ¾ ton truck)
Arboriculture operations including small and large tree care
Other duties as assigned
Energy and Waste:
Litter picking and planned garbage/recycling collection and disposal in parks
Providing support for special events including delivery, set up, takedown, clean-up
Other duties as assigned
Education and Experience
High School Diploma
Post-secondary education in parks operations, horticulture, arboriculture, or related fields is an asset
Standard First Aid and CPR certification
Required Skills/Knowledge
Experience in horticulture or grounds maintenance
Experience in the operation of various equipment used in parks or landscaping e.g. cord trimmers, mowers, tractors and trucks is an asset
Sound knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment application for several functional areas of parks maintenance work
Exercise some independent judgment and initiative
Ability to work independently with limited supervision
Can effectively work under pressure and handle difficult customer situations
Physically able and competent to perform the physical demands of this position under adverse weather and site conditions
Ontario Class "G" Driver’s License in good standing and must provide a satisfactory current Drivers Abstract from the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO)
