You are a legal professional with a strong interest in Fintech and innovative financial solutions. You have strong contract drafting skills and an eye for detail. You are an open learner and love to collaborate with a close-knit team. You are a structured and logical thinker, capable of taking a problem and breaking it down into its component parts. You’re non-judgmental if a process isn’t perfect; you will help get it there. You are looking for your next role in a high paced environment where you can spread your wings. About you / qualifications:
The Legal Counsel is part of the Peoples Group Legal Department and will primarily support the cards and payments business unit. The Legal Counsel will function as a legal expert in one or more specific business lines within the business unit.
Law degree from an accredited law school and qualified to practice law in Ontario or another province in Canada
At least 9 years relevant experience as a lawyer working with a major law firm or in-house
General knowledge of financial services products
Strong contract drafting and negotiation drafting skills, general knowledge of financial services
Strong attention to detail
Exceptional organizational, time management, interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, adapt to fluctuating volumes and manage multiple deadlines and priorities
A self-starter who can work independently and as part of a team
Experience with consumer protection law is an asset
About the day-to day:
Drafting, reviewing, negotiating and advising internal stakeholders and external counterparts on various types of agreements
Supporting the compliance team
Developing and maintaining form agreements
Assisting business units in identifying legal issues and risks and complying with laws and regulations that apply to the businesses
Providing the business units with concise analysis and recommendations
Supporting development of new digital financial product and service solutions
Managing external legal counsel
