About New Start:
New Start is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting healthy relationships. Our services include individual and group counselling for those who have used abuse or violence within their relationships, counselling for partners/former partners of the clients involved, as well as community workshops and public education. In addition, New Start provides programming and services for fathers and father figures through our Fatherhood Matters program. New Start Counselling serves a culturally diverse population, often marginalized by poverty and racism, and includes both urban and rural communities.
About the role:
The Social Worker is responsible for conducting needs assessments, providing brief interventions, resource and system navigation, as well as client-centred advocacy. This work will include both individual support and group programming, with the Social Worker acting as a bridge between our new community supports and our clinical services. The Social Worker must demonstrate sensitivity, compassion, and a non-judgmental attitude, as well as initiative, self-direction and teamwork. The Social Worker will maintain collaborative partnerships within the community and represent the organization as part of committees and networks as required.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work
- Current registration (or eligibility for registration) with the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers
- Experience working in the intimate partner violence sector is a significant asset
- Demonstrated ability to complete initial and ongoing needs assessments, suicide risk assessments, interviewing, client-centered problem-solving, short-term case management and documentation
- Understanding of and experience providing brief and short-term solution focused therapy and motivational interviewing
- Demonstrated experience with group facilitation
- Demonstrated understanding of a trauma-informed approach to service delivery
- Ability to work collaboratively with a professional team, as well as independently
- Experience working with diverse communities and identities using social determinants of health lens
- Excellent knowledge of community resources and experience with service navigation
- Ability to establish and maintain personal/program boundaries, while providing supportive services
- Experience in the following areas considered an asset: navigating child protection and legal systems, harm reduction work
- Current First Aid and CPR (or willingness to obtain), satisfactory criminal record and vulnerable sector check
