Position Overview

Finance Services is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Specialist.

Reporting to the Manager, Finance Services the Finance Services Specialist plays an important role in the delivery of finance support for the institution. The incumbent will work with the Finance Services team to ensure timely completion of accounting, budgeting, variance and forecasting functions in compliance with the University's policy framework. The nature of work will result in the position being privy to confidential and sensitive information such as human resource planning, salary information, and faculty/unit financial information; as such confidentiality is key within this role.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Assist the Finance Services team with analyzing and processing salary recoveries while producing accurate, timely and reliable results.
  • Provide support to the Finance Services team through cyclical budgeting and forecasting.
  • Completing salary recoveries accurately and in a timely manner; this includes analysis, calculations, documentation, system entry, reconciliations and responses to queries.
  • Solving problems, analysing possible solutions using experience, judgement and established processes.
  • Preparing monthly variance/forecast spreadsheets.
  • Preparing annual budget spreadsheets.
  • Initiating journal entry requests.
  • Entering budget and forecast adjustments.
  • Ensuring current Finance processes and policies are followed.
  • Supporting Finance Partner and Analyst with ad hoc requests, as required.
  • Respecting and maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Developing trustworthy and productive working relationships.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree with three to five years experience in a business environment.
  • Proven advanced skills and ability to use Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Internet skills, familiarity with PeopleSoft.
  • Understanding of basic accounting concepts, and knowledge of GAAP.
  • Experience with general budgeting, forecasting and variance analysis concepts.
  • Ability to work effectively in a high-volume environment, handle multiple tasks and produce results quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to take initiative, to work independently and to organize and complete work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and demonstrate good judgment in a fast-paced environment with many conflicting priorities, meeting internal and external deadlines.
  • Proven ability to use discretion with confidential material, a high level of tact and professionalism and a strong work ethic are required.
  • Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Must be open to learning and development and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments.
  • Working knowledge of University business processes as well as knowledge of University policies and procedures pertaining to budgeting and finance is preferred.
