The Opportunity:
We are hiring six (6) Specialized General Labourers Seasonal (Zoo) who are responsible for routine duties to assist in the day-to-day husbandry of the animal collection, zoo operations and enhancement of the zoo visitor experience. Under the general supervision, the incumbent will maintain the quality standards of accredited zoological practices.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Interact with Zoo visitors through Zoo Chats, seasonal exhibits, tours, etc.
- Conduct live animal presentations to the public as directed.
- Explain and enforce zoo regulations and policies.
- Interact with visitors to provide information on new exhibits, births, daily programming, emergency procedures, location of washroom facilities, concessions etc.
- Assist with daily animal husbandry and support zoo operations as directed.
- Assist with unloading of animal nutrition supplies.
- Assist with the preparation and distribution of animal diets as directed.
- Ensure animals have regular access to clean potable water.
- Provide animal handling and/or animal enrichment support as directed.
- Record daily observations of animal behaviour, health and welfare in accordance with industry standards and zoo policies and procedures.
- Clean exhibits and support maintenance in related Zoo areas as assigned.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
- A high school diploma and/or GED equivalent. Preference is given to those who are currently working towards or have earned a degree in any of the life sciences or other related field.
- Must have a strong interest in zoology, conservation biology or related fields.
- Must possess a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver's License.
- Basic technology and computer skills.
- A minimum of two (2) years performing general labour and operational experience.
- Previous experience working in teams and dealing with both internal and external customers.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
- Physically demanding and repetitive tasks.
- Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position, working outdoors in all types of weather.
- Must be able to frequently handle heavy loads of up to 45-50 lbs and the ability to push/pull 50-250 lbs. Documentation of physical capacity may be required.
