Employees ensure the safe, compliant, and reliable operation of the station’s generating units and auxiliary equipment. This includes monitoring and maintaining operations within equipment design parameters and in accordance with station operating standards including during start-ups, shut-downs, and upset conditions. In addition, employees will administer Safe Work Processes, support the development of junior/new operators and shift team members, and participate in the development and ongoing improvements to safety and training systems and materials.

What you’ll be doing:

Under the general supervision of the Shift Supervisor or Operations Coordinator, employees oversee all aspects of plant operations, performs shift related administrative duties, and is the designated Issuing Authority of the Safe Work Process. Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Developing and implementing safe work practices/plans and administering the Safe Work Process system. Work is prioritized and required activities are communicated to the shift operators.
  • Assisting other Operators in evaluating upset/emergency situations and hazards and determining how to safely proceed given the situation and ensuring that the emergency response capabilities are maintained in accordance with station and/or Host Site standards and that the emergency responsibilities are carried out.
  • Ensuring that the plant is operated within the station’s environmental license limits and taking appropriate actions on potential environmental problems by reporting and taking corrective actions in accordance with station policy and documenting environmental issues in the appropriate logs.
  • Maintaining standard operating procedures and ensuring that the units, auxiliary equipment, boilers, and water treatment plant are operated within operating parameters and in a safe, compliant, and reliable manner.
  • Primary communication with the Real Time Desk and/or AESO for changes to unit status
  • Performing Operator in Charge duties for the site electrical distribution, substation, and transmission facilities.
  • Providing coaching, on-the-job training, and direction to junior/new operating staff.
  • Assisting with maintaining/updating current training modules, reviewing, identifying new training requirements, and developing the training modules and accompanying competency verifications.
  • Coordinating Shift Team coverage and maintenance call-ins when required, daily reporting to various stakeholders, and reviewing and updating assigned policies and procedures.
  • Reviewing and updating assigned policies and procedures, and supporting project needs with technical report writing as required.
  • Supporting JV site or station ER events and drills, and outage work plans.
  • Providing coverage in other Operating job classes where qualified to meet business needs.
  • Performing minor maintenance duties as assigned and working with the maintenance department as required.

All duties and responsibilities will be performed in accordance with established health, safety and environmental principles, corporate policies, practices and procedures and applicable government legislation.

What you must have:

  • Completion of Grade XII, including a pass standing in Math 20, Physics 20 (preference toward Physics 30), English 30 and another 30-level course with considerable related experience OR completion of a two-year Power Engineering Technology Program with considerable related experience.
  • A valid 2nd Class Power Engineer’s Certificate of Competency.
  • Five (5) or more years of related experience, or completion of the station’s Steam Plant Operator IV Qualified Level training modules and on-the-job training with at least 1 year of experience at the Steam Plant Operator IV Entry level.
  • Must have a valid Alberta operators license (minimum class 5).

Where you’ll be working:

This position is located at our Sheerness Generating Station in Hanna, AB.
