The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is the Province of BC's primary emergency response organization. It operates year-round to deliver its mandate for wildfire management and response to natural hazard emergencies. The BCWS operates provincially, delivering services through six fire centres, thirty-three zones and two provincial centres in Kamloops and Victoria.
The Predictive Services Unit (PSU) is a multidisciplinary team within Wildfire Operations. The team consists of fire behaviour, fire weather and technology specialists who develop innovative products and services that can be utilized by other teams for their programs as well as during emergency operations.
The Weather Network Specialist (Specialist) is operationally focused and provides technical expertise to support Fire Centre operations and the weather data services delivered by the Predictive Services Unit. The Specialist supports the Sr. Technologist on a variety of wildfire risk functions specific to Weather Network infrastructure and technology projects, weather data analysis and interpretation, and associated risk reporting utilized by Fire Centres and the other BCWS programs.

Job Requirements:
  • Post secondary education in the forestry, resource management, electronics, or relevant field such as computer science with related experience with the following:
    • Industry grade electronics and control systems, or
    • Electronics instrumentation, such as data collection networks, or
    • Experience with environmental data acquisition, collection, and analysis applications
  • Experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing automated monitoring equipment.
  • Experience performing technical duties and working with field deployed monitoring equipment (example: data loggers, various types of climate monitoring equipment and sensors).
  • Experience in analyzing, interpreting, and managing complex datasets.
  • Experience working in a comparable or similar capacity, outdoors, in an alpine environment, in harsh conditions;
  • Capable of maintaining adequate fitness levels to lift and carry weights up to 50 lbs, climb heights up to 20'/6m for extended periods and navigate a variety of terrains and climate conditions.
  • Capable of achieving Rope Rescue certification and Fall Risk training requirements. This position is required to work at heights.
  • High level of mechanical aptitude and dexterity working with hand, power tools, and disassembly of equipment.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence; required to operate 4x4 vehicles on rough terrain.

Preference may be given to candidates with:
  • Experience or formal certification as a Fire Behaviour Analyst (FBAN).
  • Experience developing and communicate complex technical information/reports/presentations to diverse audiences.
  • Experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing automated Meteorological monitoring equipment and instrumentation.
  • Experience managing field level projects and applying project management principles.

Provisos /Willingness statement(s)
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence,required to operate 4x4 vehicles on rough terrain
  • To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments, and corporate structures
  • To initiate and maintain personal learning to keep current on emerging innovations within area of expertise
  • To take in-house training and certification as required
  • To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required
  • To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan
  • To travel and/or overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required
  • To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat, and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions
  • To participate in Incident Command System positions as assigned

About this Position:
Six (6) positions are available. One (1) position in each of the following fire centre locations: Castlegar, Kamloops, Parksville, Williams Lake, Prince George and Smithers. See attached list for locations within fire centre areas.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.Flexible work options may not be available during emergency operations response periods.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future permanent vacancies.
