The Senior Advisor, Indigenous Relations examines controversial proposals of high economic value for use of natural resources on Crown Land and determine the impact on Indigenous Nations identified or potential traditional use areas. This position carries out consultations and negotiations to address Indigenous peoples' concerns while minimizing any negative impacts on provincial revenues.
As the Senior Advisor, Indigenous Relations, you will play the lead role in responsibilities that include supervision, training, and elements of leading system set-up in the area of consultation. In addition to the mandatory job requirements, the recruitment for this role will focus on skills and experience related to three major themes: training and Indigenous relations resource development for Nadina District staff; problem solving and issues management in the natural resource sector; as well as consultation knowledge and experience.

Job Requirements:
  • Master's Degree in natural resource management or a related discipline and at least one (1) year of recent, related experience; OR,
  • Bachelor's Degree in natural resource management or a related discipline and at least three (3) years of recent, related experience; OR,
  • Diploma in natural resource management or a related discipline and at least five (5) years of recent, related experience may be considered.

Recent (gained within the last five (5) years), related experience must include both of the following:
  • Experience conducting research and analysis related to land use, resource management, social or economic development issues and preparing recommendations for senior decision-makers.
  • Experience leading consultations and/or participating in negotiations with Indigenous peoples.

Preference may be given for one (1) or more of the following:
  • Experience working with natural resource authorizations (e.g. forestry, mining, land, water, wildlife).
  • Experience in supervising, leading, coaching, and mentoring staff.
  • Experience managing multiple projects and assignments.
  • Experience engaging and consulting with First Nations communities or Indigenous peoples in BC.

Provisos:
  • Must possess a valid BC Class 5 Driver's Licence or equivalent.
  • Must be willing and able to travel to meet job requirements.

About this Position:
There is currently one (1) permanent opportunity available with Coast Mountains Natural Resource District. This position can be located in Terrace, Burns Lake, Houston, Hazelton, or Smithers.
Depending on the successful candidate's location, a bi-weekly isolation allowance may apply.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
An eligibility may be established for current and future permanent and temporary vacancies in the above locations.
