Job Description Summary
The Student Engagement Officer is responsible for the vision, direction and implementation of programs that contribute to a positive living and learning environment for undergraduate students in the Faculty of Science at the University of British Columbia. This role is instrumental in the design and delivery of programs and services intended to facilitate support students curricular experience and a culture of learning, leadership, involvement, and service. To be successful in this role, an applicant must be interested in the student experience - they re keen to explore opportunities to move historically in-person resources to the digital realm and collaborate with faculty partners to further integrate additional support into the classroom experience.
The Student Engagement Officer works with students, other staff, faculty, and alumni in student groups/organizations, student government (Science Undergraduate Society/Alma Mater Society), Science departments, the community, and other student service areas to support student learning and engagement, personal and professional/career development. The incumbent works both independently and in strong collaboration with the Science Advising & Engagement team and the UBC Centre for Student Involvement & Careers, to both lead and support teams of student staff and volunteers.
Organizational Status
The Student Engagement Officer reports to the Assistant Director, Student Experience. The incumbent works independently with general supervision by the Assistant Director, and in regular consultation with the Director, Student Academic Services and Associate Dean, Students for the Faculty of Science. This position provides developmental coaching and direction to the Student Engagement Coordinator.
The Student Engagement Officer works closely and collaboratively with other members of the Science Advising team. Collaboration with colleagues in the Vice-President Students Office (Centre for Student Involvement and Careers) is necessary for university-wide activities, such as Orientations and Transition programming.
Work Performed
The incumbent works cooperatively and strategically with other staff, students and faculty to ensure that common goals for the unit and the Faculty of Science are established and achieved. Responsibilities include:
1 Working with the Director, Assistant Director, and the Associate Dean, Students, provide vision and direction in the development and implementation of all faculty-hosted Student Engagement programs for undergraduate students.
2 Lead and coordinate the delivery of existing student support programs designed to bridge students curricular and co-curricular experiences. Programs include those developed in collaboration with Faculty of Science departments and academic programs, UBC Orientations, SCI Team, Science Peer Academic Coaches, the Science Undergraduate Society, strategic career initiatives, and may include others developed in collaboration with colleagues within the Faculty of Science or with other Student Engagement colleagues on campus.
3 Lead, coordinate and oversee the development of curriculum and delivery of interactive workshops for Science student leaders supporting programs within the unit. Identify opportunities and propose initiatives to support student involvement in the Faculty of Science.
4 Develop and coordinate the delivery and evaluation of various peer-led programs and activities designed to enhance the student experience. Focus on supporting student leaders and identifying pathways, including removing obstacles, in the development of effective and sustainable student support programs. Integrate assessment of student leader learning and outcomes to facilitate evidence-based decision-making.
5 Coordinate and adhere to an annual budget for the Science Student Engagement unit. Exercise resourcefulness in the coordination and delivery of related programs in the Faculty of Science.
6 Identify programmatic areas, student life issues, and initiatives where programs and services would support and enhance Science Student Engagement. Identify existing gaps in the provision of resources and program supports and recommend solutions. Evaluate programs and recommend improvements as needed.
7 Hire, train, and supervise student employees, including co-op (full time) and work-learn (part-time).
8 Supervise, train and provide leadership to volunteer student leaders as they design and deliver peer programs and services for the undergraduate Science student community.
9 Participate in cross-campus committees and communities of practice such as UBC Peer Programs and faculty-based Student Engagement colleagues. Represent the views and perspectives of the Faculty of Science and Student Engagement in a thoughtful and clear way.
10 Liaise and collaborate with other Student Engagement colleagues and units on campus.
11 Maintain current awareness of the literature and research in the field of Student Engagement, particularly in the Canadian context.
12 Perform other related responsibilities as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors in judgment may cause serious results and identifiable deterioration to faculty and student relations; reduce services; cause embarrassment; increase event and program costs; and impact negatively the Faculty s reputation and accountability with organizations, students, faculty and staff. Decisions have a direct impact on the quality of Science students university experiences. Decisions have an impact on the development of relationships both within the university and in external communities.
Decisions affect the credibility of the Faculty of Science and Student Engagement programs and services, and hence the success of these initiatives university and community-wide.
Supervision Received
The Student Engagement Officer reports directly to the Assistant Director, Student Experience. As a member of the Science Advising & Engagement team the incumbent exercises resourcefulness in the coordination and delivery of student programs. The incumbent works independently, guided by unit procedures, guidelines, priorities, and strategic objectives. Work is reviewed for quality and overall effectiveness of services provided.
Supervision Given
Supervises the Student Engagement Coordinator. Responsible for the hiring, supervision, training and evaluation of that role and student employees. Recruits, hires and supervises program volunteers.

Preferred Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.Master s degree preferred.Minimum of four to five years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Experience, either professionally or as a student, working in a post-secondary environment in project management or program development is preferred. Experience in the design and delivery of curriculum and training, developmental, or skill-building workshops. Supervisory experience and ability to develop student leaders. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, including evidence of the ability to communicate well in a cross-cultural environment. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to deal effectively with a diversity of people. Proven ability to envision and implement innovative programs and initiatives and implement assessment tools to review efficacy. Ability to work effectively in a fast paced environment. Strong attention to detail. A highly motivated, creative person with outstanding critical thinking skills. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a variety of different stakeholders. Ability to present and facilitate in an engaging way. Technical skills in website design, using a content management system, and Adobe Indesign or similar software is strongly preferred. Experience in a Windows-based environment, good knowledge of twitter, blogging, and other internet technologies, and willingness to learn to use new systems. Must have excellent problem-solving skills, including the ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues, and effectively resolve. Ability to adapt and shift gears as necessary when priorities shift. Ability to plan ahead, anticipate problems, and meet deadlines efficiently. Ability to lead others and to function well within a team. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, is critical.
