What can I expect to do in this role?
In this role, you will:- organize, plan and direct activities required to perform road, bridge and culvert construction and maintenance for various Provincial Highways, Unincorporated Areas, including Local Roads Board roads and 50/50 road agreements
- develop work programs for road construction and maintenance projects, in consultation with stakeholders
- carry out inspection on contracts to ensure contract quality and safety requirements are met and programs are delivered
- provide contract management, administration and technical support to contractors
How do I qualify?
Mandatory
- The position requires the successful candidate to have a valid class G driver's licence or equivalent. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid class G driver's licence upon being hired.
Technical Knowledge and Skills
- you have demonstrated knowledge of engineering principles related to highway construction and maintenance
- you have knowledge of relevant legislation and policies pertaining to the preparation of tenders, contract administration and contract payments
- you have knowledge of construction safety methods and practices
- you have the ability to read, interpret and amend contract documents and plans
- you have knowledge of financial reporting procedures to maintain records, track budgets and forecast expenditures
- you have the ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation and acts to provide advice
Analytical, Evaluative and Decision-Making Skills
- you can review, recommend and identify road rehabilitation alternatives
- you have proven analytical, evaluation and decision-making skills to recommend technical solutions
- you can plan, organize, monitor, and prioritize work and set individual assignments
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
- you can use tact and diplomacy when interacting with both internal and external stakeholders
- you have technical writing skills to produce technical reports, correspondence, specifications and contract documents
- you can negotiate design and contract languages on behalf of the ministry in a productive and constructive manner
- you can establish and maintain effective relations with both internal and external stakeholders
Computer Skills
- you are proficient in using software applications, to create drawings, contract documents, reports and spreadsheets
