Reporting to the Manager of Underwriting Operations, the Underwriting role is a member of the underwriting team, responsible for accurately assessing risk and making underwriting decisions that align with the company’s risk and profitability goals. This includes analyzing and interpreting medical and non-medical information for life, critical illness, and disability.

The ideal candidate for this role will have a minimum of 2 years of experience in underwriting individual life, critical illness, and disability insurance, as well as a thorough understanding of the underwriting philosophy and practices used in the industry. They should have a strong attention to detail, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment.
Primary responsibilities:
Underwrite and assess risk on individual life, critical illness, and disability insurance applications to determine risk.
Analyze medical and non-medical information to identify any potential risks or concerns.
Applying holistic point of view to the overall risk.
Utilize underwriting guidelines and procedures to make informed underwriting decisions.
Ensure accuracy and timelines in completion of underwriting tasks and processes.
Communicate with internal and external clients, stakeholders to obtain additional information or clarify issues related to underwriting decisions.
Qualifications:
College or University degree in a health sciences or related field.
Knowledge in underwriting principles gained from a minimum of 2 years underwriting experience in life, critical illness, and disability.
Attainment or working towards Fellow Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU) designation or FLMI designation (asset)
Proven track record in underwriting productivity and quality.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Strong knowledge of underwriting systems and manuals, both for insurers and reinsurers.
Client and advisor centric with a continuous improvement mindset.
Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
An aptitude for negotiation, organization, and multi-tasking.
