QUALIFICATIONS
- Grade 12 education (MB Standards)
- Health Care Aide Certificate from a recognized program
- Unit Clerk Certificate from a recognized institution or equivalent an asset
- Completion of a recognized medical terminology course (or willing to obtain within six (6) months)
- One (1) years of experience in a health care environment
- Previous related experience as a unit clerk in a Hospital or Personal Care Home Setting an asset
- Other combinations of education and experience may be considered
- Proficiency with Microsoft programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint), as well as Internet applications and other Information Technology
- Demonstrated typing/keyboarding skills with a minimum of 40 wpm
- Demonstrated organizational skills, and the ability to work independently
- Demonstrated communication skills
- Demonstrated flexibility to facilitate changes in techniques and procedures
- Ability to display independent judgment
- Ability to respect and promote a culturally diverse population

POSITION SUMMARY
The Unit Clerk/Health Care Aide maintains the organization and reception of the nursing desk to ensure communication and smooth workflow during the assigned shift.
The Unit Clerk/Health Care Aide provides direct client care and environmental support to the nursing unit.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Overview:
- Patient scheduling functions:
- Schedules surgical appointments and procedures.
- Schedules amulatory care procedures.
- Maintains appointment schedules for pre-op and anaesthetic.
- Responds to telephone calls appropriately.
- Provides telehealth technical and operational support to users and clients in clinical and non-clinical environments.
- Acts as telehealth attendant by accompanying clients to the telehealth areas and assists clients as needed.
- Receives and directs patients and telephone calls to appropriate areas and individuals.
- Answers inquiries from patients, medical staff, and allied health staff.
- Explains established policies and regulations to the public.
- Faxes and photocopies documents as required.
- Packages specimens as required.
- Completes lab and test requisitions.
- Transcribes chart and patient care plans as directed by physicians orders.
- Prepares and posts meeting notices under the direction of the Clinical Resource Nurse.
- Records minutes of meetings as necessary.
- Maintains conference room and resource room bulletin boards.
- Gathers and distributes in-going and outgoing mail to designated departments or individuals.
- Performs patient and non-patient related filing, and stamps charts as required.
- Identifies medical and clerical supply shortages and submits orders for supplies to Materials Management. Assists with restocking of supplies.
- Follows regional and local program policies and defined procedures; ensure that the location for all appropriate manuals and program policies is well known.
- Transports patients within the facility as required.
- Facilitates the transfer of patients by preparing documents for transfer and transport;contacting and communicating with other facilities and EMS as directed.
- Other duties as assigned.
