What will you be doing?
- Drive and manually load collection vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) up to 17,000 kilograms throughout the City
- Manually load residential refuse/recycling into the vehicle on your assigned routes
- Record weight, time and location on daily truck and timesheets
- Maintain positive customer service in the performance of all duties
- Operate hydraulic controls to compact refuse where applicable
- Review collection map for assigned area to ensure hot spots and trade waste locations are handled appropriately
- Report Bylaw infractions and vehicle defects to foremen
- Respond to complaints and inquiries from the public
- Maintain a clean and sanitary collection vehicle
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections and follow regularly scheduled maintenance on collection vehicles
- Conduct work in a manner that complies with the requirements set out in the City's Environmental Management System (EMS)
- Adhere to safety and environmental regulations and work procedures
- Assist other collectors in completing their routes as well as any open routes as directed
Work Environment: Driving for extended periods in all weather conditions. Physically strenuous labor is required when maneuvering bins/carts to pick-up areas and return them to their original locations
- Completion of Grade 12
- 1 year of labourer experience required
Assets:
- Experience driving a tandem truck or single-axle units with a GVW rating of at least 17,000 kilograms or a combination of training and experience is an asset
- Experience in Waste Collection or similar work requiring driving, physical labour and customer service is an asset
- Possession of an Alberta Class 3 Drivers License & Air Brakes (Q) Endorsement is an asset
Skills Required for Success:
- Physically capable of sustained, heavy manual labour, including loading refuse/recycling material for prolonged periods (up to 10 hours per day), in adverse weather and road conditions
- Ability to drive a large collection vehicle while observing all safety precautions and vehicle handling techniques
- Ability to read and interpret route maps and dispatch notices
- Ability to complete assigned route that may consist of 600-800 homes (1-3 loads) of waste and 1400 homes (1-3 loads) of recycling
- Good interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to meet and deal with the public in a courteous and professional manner
- Demonstrated ability to achieve results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and service-minded style
- Ability to wear a face mask for an extended period of time
- Applicants may be tested for driving ability as well as physical ability to perform the work

Conditions of Employment:
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s Licence & Air Brakes (Q) Endorsement, or provincial equivalent. Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
- Applicants will also be tested for their physical ability to perform the work required in this position through a Functional Ability Recruitment Evaluation (FARE) test
- Hours of work: 40 hours per week, 10-hour shifts, Tuesday - Friday. Overtime work may be required during peak operational periods.
