Job Synopsis

Mainly focused in the workroom, this part time position is responsible for facilitating the flow of inventory in a fast paced, high-capacity setting. You will work closely with the management team, other staff, and volunteers in accomplishing the day-to-day requirements of the shop by cleaning and pricing donated goods, organizing overflow items, and maintaining a flow of goods to the retail floor . This role will be scheduled for an average of 15 hours each week, based on the needs of the business.
MCCO will provide all required health and safety training including WHMIS and First AID, CPR upon hire.

Required
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and exert 11 to 25 lbs. of force frequently
  • Ability to spend 7.5 or more hours of intermittent standing or walking in a standard workday
  • Ability to repeatedly bend or stoop to floor level shelves and able to reach upper shelves with use of a stool or ladder when necessary
  • Self-motivated, willing to take initiative, willing to work as a team with staff and volunteers, prioritizing a wide variety of tasks required
  • Strong interpersonal skills with people of all ages and backgrounds with an ability to create a positive atmosphere in the shop through a healthy balance of patience, humour, and energy.
  • Create a customer centric culture – create a positive experience in all interaction points with customers, donors, volunteers, and colleagues
  • Ability to make quick and thoughtful decisions
  • Willingness to grow and learn new skills
  • Basic social media skills (Instagram, Facebook)[KK1]
  • Willing to work within and promote MCC’s Mision, Vision, Values and Thrift Operating Principles including exhibiting a heart for justice and active peacemaking both locally and globally.
  • Required to work non-standard hours, including evenings and Saturdays
  • Basic working knowledge of MS Office programs including Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint
  • Police vulnerable sector check (required upon hire)
  • Legally able to work in Canada

Preferred
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Merchandising experience
  • Awareness of second-hand market and retail trends
  • Knowledge of antiques, collectibles, and brand recognition
  • Experience with Point of Sales systems and processing cash transactions

Key Responsibilties
General
  • Serve as a brand advocate and ambassador for MCC in every interaction with customers and donors. Share about MCC and MCC Thrift Shops in the community as the opportunity arises. Establish and maintain positive working relationships with volunteers and other staff
  • Support Co-ordinators/Managers as needed to meet the demands of daily operations
  • Assist in other areas of the shop as needed
  • Assist with special events and projects as needed Assist with daily upkeep of the shop including the break room and office areas

Workroom
  • Assist Coordinators in developing strategies to meet revenue targets in their areas of focus
  • Be proactive in maintaining clean workspaces that meet health & safety standards, in the workroom and on the retail floor
  • Assist with light cleaning to ensure immaculately clean retail and workroom environment (e.g. sweeping, dusting displays, recycling & garbage collection, etc.)
  • Assist in the ongoing organization of the workroom, sell-on items, and seasonal storage
  • Sort, clean and price donations in various departments as needed
  • Use a discernable eye when dealing with antiques and collectibles, ensuring one-of-a-kind pieces are brought to the attention of the appropriate staff members
Other
  • Ensure MCC Ontario policies and procedures are followed
  • Participate in MCCO orientations, provincial meetings, Peace Conference and Staff Development Day
  • Participate in a local faith community, being willing to use personal gifts within this community and model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful interaction with others
  • Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ's unconditional love to those with whom you work, including colleagues, partner agencies, the homeless and marginalized
  • Answer inquiries about MCC from constituency and general public; communicate MCC's values, articulating the importance of MCC's criteria for workers, all of whom serve as representatives of the Mennonite and Be in Christ churches which support MCC
  • Model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful daily interactions with staff and the public
