The Department of Public Works supports Nova Scotia’s 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways, 4,100 bridges, and 9 provincial ferries. Vehicle Transportation Inspection is a Division of Public Works and is responsible for safety and compliance through education, inspection and enforcement for all road users that operate on our highways.
We inspire public confidence in the public passenger transportation service through education and enforcement of Acts and Regulations that pertain to all road users in our province.
About Our Opportunity
Under the direction of the Manager of Vehicle Transportation Inspection (VTI), you will be responsible for the management of carrier records. This work is conducted within a regulatory environment, with decisions and actions mainly governed by the Motor Vehicle Act, the Motor Carrier Act, associated Regulations to those Acts, and departmental policy. The incumbent organizes, co-ordinates, carries out all office routines and, maintains records on the inspectors' daily activities.
Primary Accountabilities
You will monitor carrier records by reviewing convictions, traffic accidents, complaints, correspondence from stakeholders and relaying to the inspectors for appropriate action. The incumbent is also responsible for maintaining carrier records by posting correspondence and identifying Registry of Motor Vehicle (RMV) system problems, needed enhancements, and advising a recommended course of action to the manager.
The incumbent will also respond to a high-volume of public/carrier inquiries and complaints related to the National Safety Code (NSC) and, Carrier Safety records, schedule audits and maintain auditor’s schedules and supply information to the inspectors in the field for their response. The incumbent may assist VTI management with other administrative duties as required.
Qualifications and Experience
Four years of related experience or an acceptable equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered. Related experience includes proficiency in typing, extensive knowledge in spreadsheet software, Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision; possess problem-solving and decision-making skills, highly developed planning and organizational skills and be an excellent communicator.
The incumbent must have strong public relations skills and client service experience.
A knowledge of Nova Scotia Government Policies and Acts and Regulations associated with the Vehicle Transportation Inspection Division will be considered an asset.
You are a self-motivated individual who works both independently with minimal supervision and participates fully as an effective team player. Consistently you maintain confidentiality in all you do. You possess problem solving abilities and can analyze and present information in a clear, concise manner. Your exceptional interpersonal and communication skills are essential when responding to client inquiries. You consistently maintain a professional and courteous disposition and hold a high standard for client and customer service; particularly when assisting clients who are experiencing a stressful situation.
We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.
Equivalency
An equivalent combination of relevant training and experience will be considered. Related equivalencies include, but are not limited to:
- A completed related bachelors degree
- A completed related 2-year diploma and two (2) years of experience

Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office environment. Occasionally you may need to move or lift objects such as boxes or files. You will have daily contact with the public, staff, various Government Departments as well as other local Agencies and Institutions.

Pay Grade: CL 18
Salary Range: $1,675.62 - $1,874.80 Bi-Weekly
