Our Team

Our Newfoundland and Labrador Operations are an integrated mining, milling, and processing operation. Nickel concentrate from the fly-in, fly-out Voisey’s Bay operation is shipped to our state-of-art Long Harbour Processing Plant where it is refined into low-carbon and high-purity nickel rounds, cobalt rounds and copper cathodes.

The Concentrator Team is responsible for processing the ore from the mines at site into a concentrate suitable for shipping and processing offsite.

The Opportunity

Vale recognizes the Impacts and Benefits Agreements with the Innu Nation and the Nunatsiavut Government in which Innu and Inuit workers have first preference for employment at the Voisey’s Bay Mine Site. This is guided by an adjacency principle that first gives preference to those who live on the coast of Labrador, followed by those residing in the rest of Labrador, those residing on the island of the province, followed by the rest of Canada.

Next, priority will be given to Newfoundland and Labrador residents. We also welcome those who are willing to relocate back home and those looking to make NL their permanent home.

We are currently seeking a Concentrator Operations Supervisorto join our Concentrator department in Voisey’s Bay, NL. This is a permanent position.

This position is based at the Voisey’s Bay mine site in Labrador, a fly-in fly-out operation. This position is on a two week on, two week off rotation.

Reporting to the Concentrator Operations Superintendent, the Concentrator Operations Supervisor leads the social, commercial and technical processes of a front-line team within established limits in order to meet the production and maintenance objectives of the plant regarding safety, reliability, efficiency and quality. The Supervisor is accountable to get the process under control and maintain the process within established limits. The Supervisor identifies negative variances outside these limits and takes action to prevent them from occurring. The Supervisor ensures that their direct reports and their area of accountability meet all requirements with regards to regulations, company policies and practices, and collective agreements. Additionally, in this position, you will:

  • Manage systems within the area of accountability to achieve the following outputs;
  • Demonstrate Zero Harm to employees, the business, the environment and the community;
  • Achieve/exceed production quality & quantity targets while improving economic resources and recovery;
  • Achieve total product and unit cost expenditure targets;
  • Review & communicate risk management situations with crew members at line up and field discussions. Follow notification protocols for incidents and initiate on-shift investigations;
  • Lead and ensure safe production behaviors are exhibited by all crew members;
  • Mentor others on consistently achieving ALARA and take corrective action when necessary to address noncompliance;
  • Meet objectives and comply with: monthly safety plans, incident reporting process, policy/procedure reviews, MOC system, etc;
  • Perform injury management, working with employee and health care providers to successfully return the employee to work;
  • Identify and correct negative special cause circumstances that are within authority level and escalate those that are outside authority;
  • Continuously improve the performance of the production frontline team through effective use of established processes and procedures;
  • Complete improvement projects, as assigned;
  • Consistently apply established policies, procedures and best practices;
  • Complete all production and/or maintenance related reports and work orders, and communicates status to oncoming shift(s);
  • Control in-plant inventories of consumables and supplies, and order materials to achieve production schedules;
  • Provide input and work collaboratively with peers and other departments to achieve capital (as applicable), production and/or maintenance projects/schedules;
  • Continually acquire knowledge and skills related to: interaction with people, technical capability, and production processes;
  • Approval of time in PeopleSoft when required;
  • Assist in the development of short and long-term planning, and with operational and capital budgeting;
  • Act as a company representative on committees as required (e.g. JOHSC).

About You

Education:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

  • 5-7 years of experience in milling operations.
  • Experience supervising sulphide milling.
  • Detailed knowledge of mineral processing plant operations and process troubleshooting.

Skills:

  • Proven skills in leadership, mentoring and performance management.
  • Familiarity with safety systems and accident/incident investigation in an industrial setting.
  • Familiarity with the NL OHS Act and Regulations.
  • Proven oral and written communication skills.
  • Digital literacy, working familiarity with MS Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
