Position Summary:
This role is an integral part of service delivery to residents and other customers of Loyalist Township. The incumbent conducts exceptional service by completing Utility locate requests. The Damage Prevention Technician will complete critical infrastructure locate services for the Utilities division (Water and Wastewater) and Public Works division (Storm Water, and streetlight cabling). The position will involve utilizing multiple computer software platforms to assist with the smooth operations of the Utilities and Public Works divisions Damage Prevention program and at times with Utilities operational support. The role while locating Loyalist Township infrastructure assets is instrumental in the protection of public health and the environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent. Post secondary education in a related field is an asset.
· Two (2) years of experience performing water/wastewater/storm water and streetlight cabling infrastructure locates.
· Damage Prevention Technician (DPT) certification is an asset.
· Operational experience with utility locating equipment.
· Knowledge and interpretation skills of engineering drawings and construction processes.
· Strong understanding of Ontario One Call 360 Feedback processes.
· Advanced underground cable and pipe locating training is an asset.
· Knowledge of water, wastewater and storm water functions, material used, typical locations and danger/ hazards each system can pose is an asset.
· Ability to locate electrical infrastructure is an asset.
· Required to possess and maintain valid Class “G” driver’s license with a clean driving record.
· Required to obtain and maintain satisfactory CPIC (Criminal Record Check).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
· Process Damage Prevention locate requests on behalf of the municipality through the mandated Ontario One call 360 feedback system.
· Complete locate requests/tickets as required in a timely manner for water, wastewater, storm water and streetlight cabling infrastructure.
· Conduct locates for emergencies, priorities, and standard requests within the specified time frame.
· Communicate with Utilities Operations Clerk and other staff.
· Complete field inspections and use appropriate equipment and technologies including but not limited to various electromagnetic induction locating equipment, receivers, transmitters, and GPS designed to assist in the locating and verifying of municipally owned underground utilities.
· Mark lines using coloured flags and/or paint that are specified for each utility.
· Review and verify municipally owned infrastructure records with respect to excavation locations, and construction plans to determine the location of the infrastructure.
· Utilize historic municipal data, evaluate, and resolve any conflicting readings/measurements encountered, document, update and communicate changes required to maintain the accuracy of the municipality’s GIS.
· Effective communication with management on relevant details of locate requests or risks to water, wastewater, stormwater systems and streetlight cabling infrastructure.
· Prepare various reports and documentation verifying marked utilities including locate information to the requestor.
· As one of the points of contact for the public, provides a positive and friendly level of customer service in- person and via phone.
· Collaborate with others to improve locate request system effectiveness and efficiency.
· When workload permits, undertake work focused on Utilities operations and asset management programs, as assigned including general labour.
· Responsible as an employee for health and safety, including working safely within requirements of legislation and policies, reporting hazards, and maintaining a safe and clean environment.
· Participate in mandatory training and/or voluntary professional development to stay current in knowledge, skills, and abilities.
· Collaborate as a member of the department / division, as well as a member of the broader Loyalist Township team to meet the goals as established by Council.
· Other duties as assigned.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
Internal - Daily communication with Township employees.
External - Daily interaction with Township residents, contractors, and infrequently with government organizations.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
· Outdoor working conditions sometimes in inclement weather, with an estimated 30% /70% split between indoor and outdoor work.
· May be standing, walking for long periods (3-4 hours).
· Some exposure to challenging conversations with customers and contractors.
· Some pressure due to workload and competing demands.
· Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50lbs.
