Whinny Hill Farm is an Equine Farm and Learning Facility located on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. We have twenty-four horses, one mule, five donkeys, nine goats, three sheep and numerous cats and dogs. Some of the horses are rescues, others have pedigree, but all share in the same environment of love and care. We presently operate a riding school and are soon to begin EAL and Therapy programs.
We are looking for an Equine Manager (EM). Thisis a full-time salaried position and reports directly to the owners. It could be a job for either a single or a couple. The primary responsibility of this position is to ensure the health and well-being of all the animals of Whinny Hill Farm. These animals include horses, donkeys, goats and sheep. Duties include but are not limited to daily management and coordination of daily feeding, provision of water, turning out, and mucking stalls and paddocks as prescribed for each animal’s needs.
The EM will also be responsible for the management and documentation of equine care and health records, along with the tracking of grain, supplements, hay, supplies and bedding as well as supplies needed for horse safety. The EM will also be responsible for the maintenance of all motorized equipment on the farm.
Job Responsibilities:
● Manage daily care for all animals including feeding, stall cleaning, vetting and blanketing.
● Schedule, train and supervise Barn Assistants to ensure efficient running of the facility. Must be prepared to fill in on holidays if barn assistants cannot fill holiday shifts.
● Responsible for the implementation and maintenance of feeding and supplement administration schedules for all animals including the purchase of supplements and ensuring concentrates and hay stocks are monitored and replenished in a timely manner such that sufficient supplies are always readily available.
● Responsible for maintaining all charts, files, and paperwork with updated information in our database.
● Be on call in the event of an equine emergency and administer first aid as necessary.
● Participate in volunteer barn shift training for new volunteers.
● Primary point of contact for vet, farrier, and other necessary services for our animals.
● Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
● 5 + experience working in a riding facility or barn caring for horses, a degree in a related field is preferred but not required.
● Must be at least 21 years of age.
● Equine management experience and strong working knowledge of equine health, wellness, and training.
● Team management and leadership skills.
● Must be physically and mentally fit. The job is physically demanding and requires the ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and work outside in all kinds of Canadian weather.
● Must be meticulous and have a very high attention to detail.
● Personal maturity and the ability to cope with multiple tasks and challenges, and a strong desire to work as an effective team member.
● Desire to gain a working knowledge of Equine Assisted Activities and Therapeutic riding is encouraged.
