The Financial Accounting Specialist, Payroll (1 Year Limited Term) is responsible for performing all activities to ensure the accuracy of the accounting of payroll, benefits, and HR general ledgers. Other duties include assuming ownership of and establishing processes for payroll related balance sheet reconciliations.
Note: This position qualifies for an optional hybrid work schedule after 90 days of onsite work and onboarding. Employee will be subject to the terms of the Flexible Work Policy Agreement.
This is a 1 Year Limited Term Employment opportunity that includes extended health benefits and 3 weeks' vacation.
What you'll do
- Collaborates with HR in the establishment of policies and procedures and documents processes for the payroll function to ensure performance of key controls and provide support as necessary.
- Prepares monthly invoicing for payroll costs including intercompany billing and cross- departmental labour cost redistribution.
- Calculates quarterly Employer Health Tax payments, prepares adjustment entries and files annual returns.
- Reviews quarterly WorkSafeBC reconciliation prepared by Payroll team and proposes adjusting journal entries.
- Coordinates with Payroll HR team on reconciling balance sheet accounts, investigating reconciling items and preparing journal entries as necessary, focusing on key risk areas of benefits, pension and vacation.
- Designs and builds reports using Business Intelligence tools necessary to support labour cost analysis.
- Collaborates with HR Total Rewards team; performs analysis on the bonus plans and other incentives calculation and reviews journal entries.
- Performs labour variance analysis by interpreting payroll reports; connecting payroll reports with accounting records; identifies the issues; bridges the gap between different systems and functions and proposes resolutions.
- Liaises with financial reporting, operations finance, transactional accounting team to ensure the accuracy and completeness of labour costs and cost distribution.
- Collaborates with HR Admin team and assists with the annual pension filing.
- Liaises with various finance teams in the main business sectors including Shipyards and Marine group on GL structure re-alignment and develops reports as requested.
- Reviews accounting instruction setup for payroll costs (AAIs) and proposes recommendations.
- Participates in ad-hoc projects including Financial Reporting tools transformation and new HR & Payroll platform implementation.
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA).
- Minimum of 5 years of dynamic payroll & benefits accounting experience.
- Experience in account reconciliations, preparing and processing complex payroll journal entries.
- High level of customer focus and service orientation.
- Effectively able to prioritize workload and work under pressure.
- Strong understanding of accounting month end procedures and payroll concepts.
- Strong analytical skills to understand large and complex account reconciliations.
- Strong organization and time-management skills.
- Advanced knowledge of MS Excel.
- Experience in developing reports using Business Intelligence tools such as SAP BI and Power BI an asset.
- Experience with JD Edwards Enterprise One or proven computer proficiency with major ERP system.
- Strong communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively in a business environment.
- Maintains the highest degree of confidentiality in all matters.

The estimated salary for this position is $90,000-$110,000. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate's skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company's sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
