Position Summary
Reporting to the Dean, Faculty of Trades and Technical Programs or designate, the Food Service Kitchen Assistant works collaboratively as a member of the Culinary and Bistro Team, and they contribute to achieving a high level of food service to the students, the general public, staff, and faculty of North Island College. The Food Services Kitchen Assistant is responsible for supporting the preparation of Bistro meals, as needed, and is accountable for the cost-effectiveness of these menus by maintaining established portion sizes, providing Café customer service, and processing customer meal purchases. The Food Services Kitchen Assistant is aware of the Mission and Values of North Island College.

Duties & Responsibilities
1. Prepares and cooks breakfast and lunch products as directed by the Dean/Designate, adhering to the standards of quality and procedures as established by the Culinary Arts, Professional Cook program.
2. Prepares food products for daily service maintaining established portion sizes and effectively minimizing wastage.
3. Provides excellent customer service to all customers, including students, staff and the general public; and provides relevant information to the Dean/Designate, as required.
4. Washes dishes and small wares, as required
5. Maintains the cleanliness of the kitchen work area and related appliances.
6. Ensures a safe and professional working environment by strictly adhering to FoodSafe, WHMIS, and WorkSafeBC regulations and works in compliance with College HACCP and general Health and Safety policies and procedures.
7. Establishes and maintains positive work relations with instructors and students to support the Professional Cook program and the College as a learning environment.
8. Provide support to catering functions, including set-up and service.
9. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Dean/Designate.

Required Education & Experience
1. Minimum two years’ related experience working in a high volume kitchen, cooking short order, breakfast and lunch, within the Food and Catering Industry. Formal Cook training preferred.
2. Grade 12 graduation
3. Current Level 1 Food Safe and WHMIS certification.

1. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to plan and prioritize tasks, and respond to multiple demands within a busy high volume service environment;
2. Excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills, with the demonstrated ability to exercise tact, good judgment and diplomacy;
3. Proficiency in the required skills to ensure quality of work, attention to detail, safety requirements and ongoing knowledge and skills development to meet industry requirements.
4. Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills, including the ability to build rapport with students, staff and customers;
5. Capability to work independently and use own initiative to solve immediate problems.
6. Developed interpersonal, communication and service skills, with the demonstrated ability to exercise tact and good judgment.
7. Ability to demonstrate effective team behaviours such as active listening, sharing, collaborative participation and contributing to team goals;
8. Physical ability to meet the demands of the position including heavy lifting and long periods of standing, in accordance with Worksafe BC standards.
