The Lindsay Agricultural Society (LAS) is a federally registered charity and governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The LAS was established in 1854 and 2024 marks the Society’s 170th year as a pillar of the community. The LAS was established to improve agricultural knowledge within the community and create opportunities for dialogue between the agricultural community and the residents of the Kawartha Lakes. The mission of the LAS is: “To showcase the vibrant agricultural industry in the Kawartha Lakes while enriching the life of the community through the Lindsay Exhibition, events, entertainment, and volunteerism.” The grounds are owned by the Lindsay Agricultural Society and host over 40 events each year in addition to the Lindsay Exhibition, drawing over 100,000 visitors annually.
About the Job:
The Grounds Maintenance Labourer will assist the Grounds Manager with all aspects of maintaining the 110-acre Lindsay Exhibition Grounds site in a first rate condition for 30+ events that are held on-site throughout the summer, along with preparations for the 170th Lindsay Exhibition (LEX) in September.
Tasks include:
- Landscape maintenance (caring for and planting grass, trees, shrubs, flowers)
- Maintaining proper water flow and drainage to avoid flooding in agricultural buildings
- Assisting with proper garbage and recycling collection and disposal according to municipal regulations for business waste (including preparing waste receptacles for events, managing waste during events, and cleaning post-event)
- Cleaning of office, event, and agricultural event spaces according to internal health and safety standards
- General maintenance tasks including painting, fence repairs, preventative equipment and building maintenance
- Event staging preparations (curtains, stage placement, tables and chairs placement, temporary fence set-up, animal fencing/penning set-up, stall set-up, footing management in animal competition areas
- Working with outside contractors and service providers for audio, visual presentations, equipment rentals
Responsibilities include:
- Interacting directly with grounds rental clients (ensuring staging for their event is correct, providing support to the organizer throughout the event, being an ambassador for the LAS during events when working directly with clients and visitors)
- Assisting the permanent grounds staff and office staff teams in preparing the grounds for the LEX
- Attending regular staff meetings to ensure the grounds team is hitting progress targets and goals as they relate to the event plans for various events, including the LEX
- Required to access and interact with a list of ongoing goals, deadlines, events information, grounds information, safety checklists, and maintenance checklists through an online task manager
- Required to track work hours with a smartphone app
- Required to take the lead on at least one project as determined in discussion with the grounds manager (opportunities for more leadership opportunities as they progress in the position).
