Witset First Nation, rooted in Witsuwit’en heritage, is based in Witset, a cultural gem known as ‘Kyah Wiget' ('Old Village'). Nestled in northwest British Columbia alongside the Bulkley River, Witset thrives as a community of approximately 2,100 members. Originally Witsuwit’en fishing grounds, Witset has evolved into a flourishing village with 661 on-reserve and 1,129 off-reserve members.
Situated between Smithers and New Hazelton, Witset embraces its rich culture and history, echoing through the valley, a land loved for generations. As a federally recognized Indian band, Witset First Nation is dedicated to providing tailored programs and services for its diverse community.

About the Opportunity
Witset First Nation has an exciting opportunity for a full-time HR Manager, based in Witset, BC.
In this position, you will be primarily responsible for overseeing the Human Resources function including recruitment and selection, human resources policy and procedures, supporting the setup and implementation of performance management and training and encouraging skill building and teamwork.
Reporting to the Executive Director and with the support of the Chief and Council, you contribute to the Nation's success by developing, maintaining, and enhancing positive working relationships with Council, staff, industry partners, government, and community.
Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Developing and implementing HR strategies aligned with organizational goals
- Overseeing budget management in collaboration with Finance, ensuring financial controls and reporting
- Creating and maintaining the Human Resource Policy, conducting annual reviews of policies
- Updating job requirements and descriptions to maintain the organizational structure
- Collaborating with the Executive Director to support recruitment and objective hiring processes
- Establishing and managing a comprehensive onboarding and orientation process
- Leading the development and implementation of a succession planning process for key positions
- Orienting managers on the performance review process and facilitating their engagement
- Assisting in the establishment and maintenance of a structured wage system
- Implementing a Human Resource Information System for effective record-keeping
- Providing advice to managers and staff on HR management practices and addressing issues
- Resolving grievance and incident reports in a timely manner
More About You
To qualify for this role, ideally, you should have a minimum of 2 years' experience in a human resource setting, including supervisory or management experience. Preference is given to those with experience in a First Nation organization. Additionally, a diploma or certification in human resources or equivalent education in related fields is required. If you have fewer than 2 years of experience, we would still love to hear from you!
This position will require holding or the ability to obtain a valid BC driver's license and a reliable vehicle.
The following skills and experience will be strong attributes:
- In-depth knowledge of Indigenous culture, traditions, and challenges
- Knowledge of workplace legislation and regulations, including potential legal liabilities associated with Provincial and Federal legislation
- Deep understanding of human resources management best practices, preferably within First Nations
- Proven ability to work confidentially
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Demonstrated knowledge using an HRIS (asset)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Willingness to integrate into the community and actively participate in local events
- Openness to flexibility in work hours to accommodate the community's needs
