RST industries is a recognized leader in safe, efficient tank transportation throughout Atlantic Canada, Ontario, Quebec and the eastern United States. In addition to conveying cargo in line with top tier industry standards, RST also provides emergency response services throughout Atlantic Canada.

We are currently seeking HSSE Coordinator / Driver Trainerbased in Barrie, Ontario.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The purpose of this role is to execute and oversee the health and safety program and support daily Tank Truck Operations and Driver Training in the RST Ontario region. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Observation & Reporting: Audit driver loading and delivery procedures to ensure alignment with corporate SOPs and behavioral expectations / sign offs. Tracking of findings (Intelex). Responsible for the execution of company Safety Management System (SMS) in the assigned region.
  • Daily Operations Management Support: Meet with terminal/customer loading facilities on a semi-annual basis. Update and maintain site maps, as required. Maintain a supply of delivery equipment. Distribute delivery equipment from office or deliver to remote drivers. Take part in all driver meetings, driver appreciation and semi-annual fleet meetings. Work with trailer maintenance vendors to ensure drivers concerns are met and fleet is maintained to RST standard.
  • Subject Matter Expert (SME): Resource to employees, management, and committees (e.g., Safety Focus Group, Health & Safety Committee). Compliance Management using company systems (i.e., Omnitracs, Intelex, Lytx, Idelic). Responsible for fleet HSSE compliance and KPI (or OKR) performance. Support for Operations team on all safety issues within the fleet.
  • Health & Safety Driver Training: Conduct training on compliance topics and support the E-Learning programs (review / auditing). Complete driver signoffs outlining competency related to product handling and delivery. Training and maintenance of in-cab satellite communication system. Assist in new driver on boarding. Ensuring driver has all tools required to have a safe start at RST. Hands on training of drivers in non-standard products (Jet) or non-standard methods (truck pump offs or pump outs).
  • Incident / Injury prevention & investigation: Root cause investigations and document facilitation. Using Intelex for investigation records (Injury). Facilitate Operations involvement in investigations. Be part of incident response group. Including arranging and managing local contractors (Environmental, Towing, Driver Check) being on scene when reasonable.
  • Coach, Change Agent, Advisor: Lead change and deliver results through others, coach leaders (Operations) as well as Drivers for behavior Change. Manage Idelic performance management system, communicate to drivers’ areas of improvement. Manage Lytx event recorders, utilizing system to improve driver performance and safety on the road.
  • Risk Management: Responsible for the site-level Risk Management Tools (e.g., RAPI, CRAM, in field risk assessments)

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • North American Transportation Management Institute (NATMI) Certified Director of Safety (CDS) or Certified Safety Supervisor (CSS) certification would be considered as asset.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) certification preferred.
  • Broad knowledge of the transportation and logistics sector is preferred.
  • Post-Secondary education in Health and Safety with a minimum of 3 year’s work experience, with a strong focus in EHS Compliance or 3 years’ experience in the trucking industry with a focus on transportation compliance.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers. Bilingual in French is an asset.
  • Excellent computer proficiency (MS Office – Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service
