Job description

Riverview Home Corporation (RHC) is a non-profit corporation providing care and support to individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities, as well as long term mental illness. RCH employees over 250 professional and support staff on a casual, part time and full-time basis.

We are currently seeking qualified enthusiastic individuals who are interested in bringing their best skills and abilities to support and make a difference to the people participating in the Independent Living Supports Program.

The Individual Living Support Program is designed to support individuals living independently in the community. The level of support is dependent on the individual and varies based on ongoing assessment and progression of skills.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Medical and Medication Support – Assist/support -Ordering, verifying, pre-pouring, and administering medications. This could also include attending any medical appts, eye, dental, doctor, psychiatrist, psychologist, etc.

· Financial Support – Assist/support -budgeting, keeping bank records, balancing bank statements, support paying bills. Maintaining financial logs for grocery money.

· Home Maintenance Support–Assist/support the individual in keeping their home clean and free of safety concerns. This would include but is not limited to kitchen, living room, bathroom, bedrooms (with permission), yards.

· Nutritional Support –assist with menu/meal planning, grocery lists, shopping, preparing meals. Encouraging healthy eating and healthier alternatives to help people live healthy lives.

· Exercise – Supporting individuals with their choice of activity (swimming, walking, hiking, fitness class, etc.)

· Community Involvement – Supporting individuals in accessing the community based on their goals and desires. Example: This could include but is not limited to;

YMCA (if the individual wants somebody to support them with exercise or swimming, staff will do this with them), church (staff could be expected to attend with them), library, educational opportunities (piccolo, NSCC), local events (parades, concerts, festivals), day trips out of town, vacations.

Vocational Support – attending and supporting the individual in their workplace.

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

· Communication- Staff must have strong verbal, nonverbal and written communication skills. Staff must demonstrate active listening skills, including reading non- verbal’s, paraphrasing, summarizing, empathizing.

· Flexibility -schedules are based on the individuals needs and may change based on their choice.

· Problem Solving – Demonstrate the ability to problem solve in any situation that arises.

· Professional Conduct– Possess the skills and ability to remain calm in situations so as not to escalate the person being supported. They also must maintain a professional boundary with individuals they support.

· Cooking and Meal Planning– Demonstrate the ability to cook healthy meals on a budget and have a toolbox of go to recipes.

· Shopping– Demonstrate the ability to shop within a budget and teach others those skills.

· Budgeting – Understand basic budgeting and how to work within a budget.

· Mental Health – Possess basic understanding of Mental Health diagnosis and best ways of supporting individuals living with mental health challenges.

· Documentation - Demonstrate the ability to record pertinent information in a professional manner, using approved methods and software.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:

· Grade XII High School Certificate or equivalent.

· Must meet the standards set by the Department of Community Services for core competencies for: (Training is provided on hire)

o Fire and Life Safety

o Medication Awareness

o Basic Principles and Practices of Personal Care

o First Aid and CPR

o Positive Principles and Practices of Non-Aversive Behaviour Changes

o Individual Program Planning

o Mandt

· Class 5 driver’s license

· Current Liability Insurance

· Valid Vehicle Inspection

· Drivers Abstract

· Proof of Covid Vaccinations

· Clear Criminal Records and Vulnerable Sector Record Check

· Child Abuse Registry Record Check

· Ability to work all shifts and on statutory holidays

· Graduation from an approved Human Service Worker, Development Worker or Residential Rehabilitation Worker course is desirable.

JUDGEMENT AND INITIATIVE REQUIRED:

· Staff will be working alone on shift and must be able to demonstrate sound judgement when supporting individuals and their choices.

· Displays initiative in meeting the needs of residents, staff, relatives and friends.

TYPE AND LEVEL OF SUPERVISION:

· Must be able to provide leadership to resident groups, work co-operatively with other members of the care team and assist in the orientation of new staff, volunteers and students.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

· Physical demands include: bending, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, climbing stairs, assisting with lifting of residents and supplies, carrying loads up to 40 pounds and meeting the walking and standing needs that are required in this position.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

· Community based requiring travel to worksites, apartments and home sites.

· Primarily – working alone

· Typically - well-lit, warm indoor environment.

· May be necessary to work outside even in inclement weather.

· Outside activities, may include; snow clearing of emergency exits, walking, sports, camping, beach trips etc.

· Will be required to transport or accompany individuals in a vehicle.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Resident’s diagnoses and symptoms demand complete knowledge and application of the principles and practices of the Mandt System.

Must have empathy with residents and be supportive of programs for their benefit, practicing and applying Supportive Decision Making and Choice. Must be able to foster and maintain harmonious relations with other services and departments, suppliers, regulatory organizations, and the community. Honesty, integrity, and willingness to accept and lead organizational change are essential.
