The IT Specialist – Web Admin is responsible for providing a wide variety of IT support and for the administration, development, and deployment of web systems and infrastructures to enable and improve outcomes for administrative, teaching and research computing at the Faculty of Environment. In addition to overseeing the Faculty’s web initiatives, the Specialist provides expertise in Unix infrastructure, operating systems, and multimedia. The Specialist is also responsible for the provision and support of all information technology and related computing systems in the Faculty.
Responsibilities:
IT Support, including but not limited to:
Deliver advanced level problem solving for Windows and Macintosh platforms. Working with clients to support and resolve their computing and related IT issues (hardware and software)
Problem solve a variety of computing related issues within the Faculty
Provide support for computing lab workstations and servers, and for re-deployment and troubleshooting/maintenance of lab computers
Expertise in Unix systems, servers, and Virtual Machines (VMs). Administer, configure, maintain and test Unix servers and VMs, ensuring they are kept secure. Develop and maintain backup procedures to ensure minimal downtime and data loss
Research and provide expertise on a variety of tools and processes
Develop, document, and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs), strategies, and best practices for a wide range of IT areas of operation, for the Faculty’s webspace and its underlying infrastructure
Manage secure access to confidential data, such as the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and Canadian Graduate and Professional Student Survey (CGPSS)
Web Administration/Development, including but not limited to:
Consult and lead the Faculty’s web managers with their sites, devise a web strategy that is tailored to their goals, finding creative solutions to their needs, keeping them abreast and train them of new technologies/options, and guide them through major web system upgrades
Assist web managers in analyzing, distilling and understanding site analytics and metrics
Work with IST developers in the design and deployment of campus-wide web systems initiatives
Ensure all the Faculty’s sites meet the AODA, University policies, and best practices on SEO, security, and privacy
Researches Web technical developments for relevance to teaching/research and office environments
Provide expertise in UX/UI for applications and systems developed in-house
Collaborate with colleagues across campus on projects that benefits the Faculty and the University
Serve as the Faculty’s primary point of contact for the web and oversee all the Faculty’s sites throughout its lifecycle
Active in the Campus WCMS development community including alpha/beta testing of new system upgrades
Develop features and functionalities within the WCMS that aligns with Faculty’s and campus’s needs
Services Development, including but not limited to:
Identify, propose, and acquire or develop applications and technological solutions to support the Faculty’s goals in administration, teaching and research
Explore new tech on how it can benefit the faculty and then design, develop and deploy
Recommend enhancements and improvements to systems and processes; provide guidance on technological evolution
Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality technologies specialist, assessing needs and supporting teaching and experiential learning initiatives
Generate creative elements
Develop and implement plans in accordance with MAD and ENV’s strategic and operational plans
Project management
Trains and co-supervise helpdesk assistants
Qualifications:
A university degree in computing or computing-related discipline together with relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience in evaluating current and forthcoming Web technologies and assessing their application to teaching, research, and administrative needs
Experience in providing academic and research support in a university context.
Experience with a wide range of web-related Content Management Systems (e.g., Drupal, WordPress)
Experience with tools that are central to a administrator’s or developer’s toolbox (Git, integrated development environment (IDE), graphics manipulation tools, project management tools, Infoblox, etc)
Experience working in multiple operating system environments (including Windows, MacOS, Linux).
Ability to solve problems independently and be a self-starter is required
Strong interpersonal and (oral and written) communication skills are required to work collaboratively with MAD team and with campus-wide colleagues
Ability to work on several projects simultaneously and have excellent time management, planning and organization skills, project management skills
Programming skills are required
