Kindergarten to Grade 2 Elementary Teacher

Tsay Keh Dene is a remote community located in Northern BC in Rocky Mountain Trench in some of the most beautiful natural surroundings in the world. Job Summary:

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Elementary School Teacher to join our team in Tsay Keh Dene, a remote First Nation community nestled in the breathtaking landscapes of Northern British Columbia. The ideal candidate will be committed to providing quality education and support to students in Kindergarten to Grade 2 while embracing the unique cultural context of the community. Recognizing the significance of outdoor education, the role emphasizes the integration of nature-based learning experiences into the curriculum. Tsay Keh Dene School is known for its very small classes, offering an intimate learning environment that fosters close relationships between students and teachers.

Responsibilities :

· Develop and implement engaging lesson plans aligned with the British Columbia curriculum, incorporating Indigenous perspectives, knowledge, and cultural traditions suitable for Kindergarten to Grade 2 students.

· Integrate outdoor education opportunities into the curriculum, utilizing the natural environment as a classroom to enhance student learning and connection to the land.

· Create a nurturing and inclusive learning environment that fosters student engagement, creativity, and foundational skill development both indoors and outdoors.

· Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of young learners, including those with varying learning styles, abilities, and cultural backgrounds, within the context of small class sizes and outdoor learning environments.

· Collaborate with colleagues, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members to integrate Indigenous knowledge and practices into outdoor education experiences suitable for young children.

· Utilize developmentally appropriate teaching strategies and resources, including hands-on activities, play-based learning, and nature exploration, to support early childhood development and curiosity.

· Assess student progress and provide timely and constructive feedback to students and parents/guardians, utilizing age-appropriate assessment methods that align with outdoor learning experiences.

· Establish nurturing relationships with students, families, and community members, demonstrating respect, empathy, and cultural sensitivity within outdoor settings and small class environments.

· Support students' social-emotional development and well-being through outdoor activities that promote cooperation, resilience, and environmental stewardship tailored to young learners.

· Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills and knowledge related to early childhood education, outdoor education, Indigenous education, and environmental sustainability.

· Engage in ongoing reflection and evaluation of teaching practices to continually improve student learning outcomes within the context of outdoor education and small class sizes for young children.

· Collaborate with school leadership and staff to support school-wide initiatives, events, and activities that promote outdoor education, early literacy, and environmental awareness.

· Respect and adhere to school policies, procedures, and protocols, including those related to safety, risk management, and environmental sustainability in outdoor settings appropriate for young children.

Qualifications:

· Bachelor's degree in Education or Early Childhood Education (Master's degree preferred).

· Valid teaching certification issued by the British Columbia Ministry of Education.

· Experience teaching in early childhood education, preferably with a focus on Kindergarten to Grade 2.

· Knowledge of the British Columbia curriculum and experience in curriculum development and implementation for young learners.

· Understanding of Indigenous culture, history, and traditions, with a commitment to incorporating Indigenous perspectives into early childhood education experiences.

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with young children, colleagues, families, and community members within outdoor settings and small class environments.

· Flexibility, adaptability, and patience in working in a remote and culturally diverse environment, with a passion for outdoor learning and early childhood development.

· Ability to create a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment within outdoor settings and small class sizes for young children, where all students feel valued and respected.

· Dedication to ongoing professional growth and learning, including participation in early childhood education training, outdoor education workshops, Indigenous education seminars, and environmental sustainability initiatives.

Benefits

· Salary: $ 60, 000 - $100,000 depending on experience and education.

· Fully subsidized housing including rent and utilities

· Employee benefits (includes massage, chiropractic, orthopedic, naturopathic, vision, dental, and prescriptions)

· Retirement package 5% match

· Travel provided from point of hire to Tsay Keh Dene at start of contract, Christmas Break and end of contract.

· Moving allowance up to $1000

· 3 weeks paid at Christmas

· 2 weeks paid at spring break

· Sekani Awareness Cultural Week - school closed for 1 week in May for cultural participation

· Fully furnished housing (including bedding, couches, TV, dining room table and chairs, dressers, all major appliances)

· Up to date technology in all classrooms

· Use of school 4x4 pickup truck, snowshoes, cross country skis, and a small workout facility.
