Laboratory Assistant
SUMMARY:
The BC Neuroimmunology Laboratory is a clinical laboratory focused on providing state of the art diagnostic tools for neuroimmunological and neurodegenerative disorders to improve outcomes for patients with these severe and potentially fatal diseases. Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, the Laboratory Assistant will assist the technical and administrative teams by participating in various steps of laboratory system workflows and perform routine laboratory maintenance tasks.
The Laboratory Assistant will interact with all laboratory personnel, including the Quality team, other technicians, and students and volunteers.
Due to the nature of the testing require, the Laboratory assistant may be required to work various shifts including days, nights, weekends or holidays. Schedule flexibility with and without advanced notice is required
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Receiving and accessioning specimens.
· With permission and supervision, assisting other laboratory technicians with low-risk laboratory tasks.
· Administrative tasks including answering phones, replying to customer enquiries, and sending patient result reports.
. Filing records as per written procedures.
· Performing other tasks as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:
· High school diploma or GED; B Sc preferred
· Experience in a laboratory or office administration environment preferred
SKILLS:
· Highly organized and detail-oriented
· Strong computer skills (MS Office including Word, Excel, Visio)
· Strong written/verbal communication skills
· Able to operate quickly, efficiently and independently with minimal direction
· Flexible and adaptable to take on additional responsibilities as appropriate
COMPETENCE REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTED OUTPUTS:
· Completes sample receiving and accessioning activities daily on time with minimal errors
· Upon approval by Laboratory Manager, provision of timely technical assistance to team members on appropriate tasks as required

· Performs all tasks on time and to a high standard
· Open to learning new skills and willing to be adaptable in a busy work environment
· Asks questions and requests guidance as needed, to enable independent work once trained
