What's the job?
As the Legal Counsel, you will act as a strategic legal advisor and partner to Coast Capital business units, providing timely, responsive and proactive legal advice on a broad range of matters relating to Coast Capital's operations to enable Coast Capital to make business decisions and implement strategies with a clear and well-informed understanding of legal and regulatory risks. You are a generalist capable of advising on various legal matters, including corporate/commercial matters, corporate governance, regulatory issues, disputes, investigations, and other matters as required.
What else will you get to do every day?
  • Provides advice concerning legal issues related to the Coast Capital's operations and strategies, including, without limitation, matters relating to corporate projects, products and services, regulatory compliance, corporate governance, policies, disputes, investigations and other corporate issues as required.
  • Partners with business units to support achieving enterprise objectives while appropriately managing legal and regulatory risks.
  • Advises on contracts, leases and other legal instruments and, where appropriate, negotiates on Coast Capital's behalf.
  • Supports the operational excellence of the Legal function and continuously re-thinks the way that legal services are provided to enhance service delivery to the enterprise.
  • Monitors and provides advice on legal trends, new or proposed legislation and regulations that may affect Coast's activities.
  • Educates colleagues in the organization about legal and regulatory risks that impact their activities and develops user-friendly tools and resources to help them embed legal and regulatory principles into their activities.
  • Oversees the provision of external legal services, including managing relationships.
  • Reports on activities, risks and issues to the VP of Corporate Legal Transactions & Governance and, as appropriate, others.

  • Who are we looking for?
  • Bachelor's Degree and Law Degree (LLB or JD)
  • Lawyer called to the bar in BC or ON
  • Knowledge of the business and regulatory environment in which Coast Capital operates and relevant legal subject matter
  • Legal research, writing and analysis.
  • Drafting of legal instruments.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills (oral, presentation and written)
  • Strategic thinking and business acumen.
  • Strong analytical and creative problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong organizational skills and time management
  • Credibility and objectivity when faced with opposition to a concept or specific issue.
  • Ability to build and utilize effective working relationships across reporting lines and with individuals and groups at various levels.
  • Strong attention to detail.
