What you will do
The Librarian, Newcomer and ESL Services is responsible for the planning, delivery and assessment of services and programs with a focus on Newcomer and ESL learners. The position holder will plan and deliver programming, training and outreach, perform collection maintenance responsibilities, and serve as a Person-in-Charge (PIC). They will supervise, train, and evaluate a team of Senior Library Assistants in the Information Services department.
In this role you will:
- Seek and identify settlement, employment or language barriers facing newcomers, which the Library can actively work to remove or address and identify potential partners to support these initiatives
- Oversee services, initiatives, and training for staff and customers that support cultural sensitivity and the unique needs of newcomers and ESL learner
- Provide dedicated support for the continued success of the Library Settlement Partnership (LSP) and collaborate with settlement workers to coordinate LSP one-on-one services, programs, and outreach at several library locations
- Provide advanced reference, readers’ advisory, borrower services and technology support
- Respond to incidents involving escalated customer behaviour or medical emergencies, and use judgement and training to determine if and when to call emergency services
What you bring
- MLS, MIS, or MLIS
- 6–12 months of related experience
- Knowledge and experience working with immigrant communities
- Experience teaching English as a Second Language (ESL)
