This position examines controversial issues and proposals which have high economic value, high risk for legal challenges, or high political impacts. Issues and proposals are regarding the use of natural resources on Crown Land and require a determination of the impact on First Nations identified or potential claimed or proven Aboriginal Interests. This position carries out consultations and negotiations to address First Nations' concerns while minimizing any negative impacts on provincial revenues. The position is a recommending authority to Ministry Executive on whether the proposals should proceed.
The Senior Advisor, Indigenous Relations will lead the development of positive working relationships with First Nations and develop innovative engagement strategies to advance the provincial economy, promote economic diversification, and increase revenue to the Crown. In addition to leading engagement and consultation with First Nations, the position is also accountable to collaborate with industry partners and other ministries and agencies.

Job Requirements:
  • Master's degree in the resource management field, Indigenous Studies, Arts, Social Sciences, Law, Natural Resource/Environmental Management, or Public Administration or equivalent as recognized by the relevant association and 1 yearrelated experience; OR,
  • Bachelor's degree in the resource management field, Indigenous Studies, Arts, Social Sciences, Law, Natural Resource/Environmental Management, or Public Administration or equivalent as recognized by the relevant association and 2 years' related experience; OR,
  • Diploma in resource management, Indigenous Studies, Arts, Social Sciences, Law, Natural Resource/Environmental Management, or Public Administration or related field and 3 years' experience; OR,
  • An equivalent combination of education, experience and training may be considered.
  • Experience in writing, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience with managing multiple projects and assignments to meet deadlines.
  • Experience in participating in consultations/negotiations with First Nations.
  • Experience conducting research and analysis related to land use, resource management, social or economic development issues.
  • Registered, or eligible for registration, with the British Columbia professional association as required by the specialty area (i.e., Association of Forest Professionals, Institute of Agrologists, Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists). Note: immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction to the relevant BC association within six (6) months of employment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
  • Persons who self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit)
  • Experience leading complex projects with multiple stakeholders and resolving challenging issues.
  • Experience conducting research and analysis related to land use, resource management, social or economic development issues.
  • Supervisory and leadership experience.
  • Experience developing or contributing to natural resource management or social policy.

About this Position:
This position can be based in any of the following Ministry of Water, Lands and Resource Stewardship offices: Nanaimo, Victoria, Port McNeil, Port Alberni or Campbell River.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to a few days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
This position is also posted as a STO under REQ 110769.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
