About the Role

CASA Mental Health is an established non-profit organization delivering holistic, culturally-safe wrap-around mental health services to Albertans and their families. CASA provides mental health service to the missing middle – mental health treatment for diagnosed children and youth, in between prevention and promotion in primary and community care, and acute treatment in hospital.

CASA’s team of mental health professionals are trauma experts committed to delivering service in collaboration with community partners. This includes assessment and treatment for up to 4,000 children, youth and their families each year, from community outreach settings to intensive treatment programs.

Job Description

CASA House is a voluntary tertiary care residential program for youth aged 12-17. CASA House employs a multidisciplinary team that works closely with the youth from a bio-psycho-social treatment approach, and utilizes a trauma-informed approach in all areas of programming. Adolescents who come to CASA House have complex needs, including severe mental health challenges, family dysfunction, school issues, peer related issues and social/economic challenges.

Reporting to the Clinical Manager and working with the Nursing Professional Practice Lead, the Mental Health Nurse works collaboratively within an multidisciplinary team to provide and coordinate services for children, youth and families receiving mental health services from CASA.

The Mental Health Nurse will:

  • Provide nursing assessments and plans of care for clients, including medication administration and monitoring, teaching, telephone follow-up and health promotion.
  • Practice according to the code of ethics and practice standards of their specific professional college.
  • Assist with individual or group therapy as directed and as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with other professionals to promote continuity of care, and assist families with connecting to a primary care physician.
  • Identify service delivery improvements and suggest enhancements, utilizing a lens of evidence-informed practice and with consideration to CASA’s strategic and operational plan.
  • Maintain client electronic health records in a complete and timely way.
  • Work collaboratively with the research department to assist with critical appraisal, evaluation and knowledge transfer.
  • Contribute to program and clinical team meetings.
  • Participate in planning and implementation of the recreation program at CASA House.

Minimum Salary: $38.43

Maximum Salary: $50.59

Hours per Shift: 7.25-hour evening shifts (15:00 to 22:45)/Nine-hour day shifts (07:00 to 16:30)

Shifts per Week: Per rotation

Days Off: Per rotation

Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited nursing education program.
  • Must be a member in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta or the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta.
  • A minimum of three years of recent experience in pediatrics and mental health is required.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
  • Preferred experience in crisis intervention and de-escalation.
  • Knowledge of the Health Information and Protection of Privacy Information Acts in addition to professional organization’s ethics and standards of practice.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records or similar information systems.
  • Ability to work autonomously, independently and to prioritize work activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to new or changing situations.
  • Flexibility and skill with interpersonal situations.
