Position Overview:
The Town of Bancroft is hiring a Maintenance Labourer - Summer Student position who reports to the Parks Lead Hand or their designate for performing general maintenance duties, assisting with flower watering and gardening duties, construction projects, cleaning the park grounds and buildings, and operating small grass cutting equipment. This is a contract position at 40 hours per week, commencing May 6th, 2024 (flexible) and ending September 1st, 2024 (flexible). The rate of pay for this position is $17.50/hour. The preferred candidates will be enthusiastic and demonstrate core competencies including (but not limited to): communication, interpersonal skills, technical skills and analytical skills.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible and accountable for general maintenance, cleanup duties and safetychecks associated with various Municipally owned lands and facilities;
- Operate light vehicles, lawn tractors, small grass cutting/hedge trimming machinery,power tool, radio communications equipment and other specialized seasonalmaintenance equipment;
- Assist with construction and landscape projects;
- Collect and dispose of garbage and litter as directed;
- Move supplies, picnic tables and equipment as directed;
- Watering and deadheading flowers and gardens, general maintenance;
- Clean washroom facilities, and other public use areas;
- Event setup and tear down;
- Responsible for providing general information to the public and assisting withtheir concerns and complaints when appropriate;
- Setting up seasonal operations as directed (i.e. clearing trails, cleaning equipment,trail and park signage, and setting up sports fields);
- Will perform their duties and work in accordance with the Municipality’s Health and Safety Policy and Procedures as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act, including all applicable regulations;
- Perform other related duties as directed by the Parks Lead Hand or designate.
Qualifications, Skills & Job Knowledge:
- Class “G2” driver’s license preferred – minimum “G1”;
- Criminal Record Check required;
- Experience in one or more of the following is a definite asset: landscaping, lawn maintenance, construction, and janitorial duties;
- Capacity to work both independently and in a team environment;
- Ability to adapt to the daily challenges associated with a busy work environment;
- Capacity to operate a variety of landscape and maintenance equipment;
- Capable of lifting equipment, tables and a variety of heavy objects;
- Job requires mental alertness to ensure the safety of others;
- Job requires moderate physical exertion;
- Involves mental and visual concentration;
- Students who are attending a post-secondary institution in September 2024 preferred.
Working Conditions:
- Working conditions may contain moderate risks which require planned safety precautions for limited periods of time;
- Physical work may including the use of small tools, lawn maintenance equipment and tractors;
- Considerable periods of sitting, standing, and driving possible;
- Moderate to heavy lifting, pushing, pulling at times;
- Scheduled weekend work is required;
- Student required to have green patch work boots;
- You will be working outdoors in diverse weather conditions (rain, heat, etc.) with physical activity involved, including traversing through fields, streams, and wooded areas, in accordance with the Employment Standards Act and Workplace Health and Safety regulations.
- All Summer Students will be given an opportunity to assist with Town events, meaning some limited weekend work may be available.
