The Highland Art Theatre Association is a not-for-profit organization whose mandate is to foster the theatre community in Sydney's downtown, to work with our artists and musicians to help drive an arts-based economy by developing a professional community of performing artists who produce first class, home-grown productions with a special emphasis on Cape Breton stories and song.

Position Overview:Highland Arts Theatre, located in Sydney, NS, is seeking a highly motivated and organized individual to join our team as a Production Assistant. Reporting to the Resident Designer and Technical Director, the Production Assistant will play a crucial role in the overall success of our theatrical productions by providing support in building, sourcing, pulling, and creating inventory of sets, costumes, and props. This is a 6 month term position, with the possibility of becoming a full-time position.
Key Responsibilities:
Set, Costume, and Prop Coordination:Collaborate with Designers to assist in the construction, sourcing, and installation of sets, costumes, and props for theatrical productions.Work closely with the production team to ensure timely and efficient creation of set pieces, costume creation and fittings, and prop creation during rehearsals and performances.Maintain a keen eye for detail to ensure the excellence of sets, costumes, and props according to the artistic vision of each production.
Inventory Management:Establish and maintain an organized inventory system for props, costumes, and sets.Track the usage, condition, and whereabouts of all production-related items.Conduct regular inventory checks and collaborate with the production team to replenish or replace items as needed.
Team Collaboration:Collaborate with colleagues to troubleshoot and address any issues related to sets, costumes, and props during rehearsals and performances.Assist the team with readying public facing areas for performances. Including printing headshots, posting signage, and updating posters in the main lobby and surrounding area.
Assistance in Production Planning:Assist in the planning and execution of production timelines, ensuring that all set, costume, and prop-related tasks align with overall production schedules.Provide support in the coordination of load-in, technical rehearsals, and strike activities.Qualifications:Previous experience in theatrical production, set construction, or related fields is an asset.Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.Effective communication and interpersonal skills.Flexibility and adaptability to changing production needs.Physical stamina for lifting and moving set pieces and equipment.
