Heads Up for Inclusion (HUI)

HUI is looking for an energetic person who is able to self-motivate, create new content, systems and policies, taking an idea and turning it into a reality.

Job Title: Programs Coordinator

Job Type: Part-time up to a maximum of 40 hours bi-weekly; including evenings and weekends.

Wage: $18-$21 an hour.

Location: Peterborough, ON.

Closing date: Friday February 9th at 3pm

Interviews to be held on: 2nd or 3rd full week of February

Start Date: February or March 2024

Job Summary:

The Programs Coordinator’s purpose is to establish, implement and coordinate a volunteer engagement and leadership program following the Canadian Code for Volunteer Involvement (CCVI). In addition they will adapt HUI’s existing Amigos and Amigos in the Community and School programs, to ensure that they meet the needs of individuals with barriers to inclusion in and out of school. The successful candidate will coordinate all aspects of its execution, scaling deliveries over 3 years.

The ultimate goal of this position is to provide a supportive environment for those who are experiencing barriers to inclusion, to develop friendships and participate in their school and communities, leading to more meaningful lives.

Key Accountabilities

  • Responsible for researching best practices, modifying and adapting existing program content, and developing new innovative and engaging program and training content
  • Responsible for all aspects of program execution and delivery
  • Community development and partnership development - Establish good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with schools, community groups, funders, politicians, and other organizations to help achieve the goals of the organization
  • Deliver presentations to the general public promoting HUI, and the Amigos in the Community volunteer program and Amigos School Program
  • Direct the adoption and implementation of the Canadian Code for Volunteer Involvement (CCVI) including the creation of associated necessary volunteer/board policies, training, orientation material etc.
  • Promote the volunteer program to gain community support of the volunteer program and the organization
  • Input and track volunteer participation using contact relationship management (CMR) software
  • Conduct volunteer intake survey to determine areas of interest for Amigo’s participants in order to facilitate positive and engaging friendships
  • Cultivate and coordinate a diverse group of volunteers
  • Promote the programs to gain community support of the program and the organization through various media channels like: e-newsletters, web content updates and social media.
  • Develop and implement effective strategies to recruit the right volunteers with the right skills
  • Compile volunteer contribution to Amigos Newsletter

Working conditions: The majority of work will be conducted out of the HUI office which is accessible. There will be times when the coordinator will need to work off-site during meetings, presentations and/or program delivery. Occasional work during evenings and weekends may be required. Due to COVID-19, HUI has allowed individuals to work from home as necessary at the discretion of Public Health, HUI Board and Executive.

Transportation: Your own vehicle is an asset

Required Skills and Experience:

  • 2-3 years work experience in a not-for-profit environment, with demonstrated experience coordinating community projects, developing program content, working with external partners planning and coordinating events, managing volunteers, and developing community partnerships
  • Experiential education experience and knowledge of various learning styles
  • Sense of fun, and understanding of youth and adult education/training
  • Knowledge of a wide range of abilities
  • Understanding of Inclusion, and Diversity
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills
  • Knowledge of ‘People First’ language
  • Demonstrated ability to network, establish and maintain effective relationships and partnerships with key stakeholders
  • Excellent writing and research skills
  • Self-directed with the ability to work autonomously
  • Highly organized with strong time-management skills; able to manage multiple project components simultaneously and meeting competing deadlines
  • Advanced working proficiency with Microsoft Word, and e-mail applications, and working knowledge of social media
  • Experience organizing and planning educational, social, and training events
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Independent Living Philosophy

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Proven organization skills involving multitasking and deadline management.
  • Attention to detail and professional communication skills.
  • Lived experience with a disability, or close connection to someone with a disability is preferred.
  • A University degree is considered an asset.
  • College Diploma in a related field is considered an asset.
  • Experience in the recruitment, training and retention of volunteers is an asset.
  • CMR Software, WordPress CMS and Microsoft Excel experience an asset.
  • Ability to create accessible documents and presentations.
  • A vehicle and driver’s license are an asset.
