Position Overview:

The Program Specialist - Blind or Visually Impaired (BVI) is responsible for supporting and guiding teachers to develop and implement programs and an environment that is developmentally and culturally appropriate. They focus on individual and group professional learning that will expand and refine understanding about research-based effective instruction. The Program Specialist - BVI delivers instructional programing to learners in a virtual or in-person group setting in areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum (BVI).

This role is highly engaging and collaborative, with the opportunity to channel creativity whilst working within a dynamic interdisciplinary team to design and implement programs in online and in-person contexts, using up to date instructional strategies and technology.
The Program Specialist – BVI demonstrates a strong commitment to student success by planning in support of student learning and well-being. This role reports to the Coordinator of Programs, Atlantic Provinces –BVI.
Qualifications and Experience You Bring:
  • Master's Degree in the Education of students who are blind or visually impaired, or equivalent.
  • A valid Nova Scotia Teaching Certificate.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in programming and service delivery for students who are BVI.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in the assessment of learner needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of educational programs and services for learners.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in the areas of student equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Deals openly, honestly, and transparently in pursuit of common goals.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented, with strong decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a leadership capacity within the education setting.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and values recommendations in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven ability to prioritize effectively, productively lead multiple priorities, and work in a team environment, contributing to the success of the organization and the leadership team. Will be collaborating with APSEA colleagues, educational team members, and other agencies and educational partners.
  • Comfortable working in a virtual learning environment.
  • Takes a proactive approach, seeking new knowledge and skills while looking for opportunities to enhance efficiency within the organization.
  • Works independently with limited supervision, is self-directed.
  • French language and American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency is an asset.
  • Occasional travel within the Atlantic Provinces: access to a reliable mode of transportation required.
