The role. We are seeking a full-time, permanent Project Manager within our Maintenance & Engineering Department. Reporting directly to the Lead Project Manager, this role is responsible for leading project teams to deliver high-quality capital projects from inception, development, construction and commissioning through to final financial closure and asset capitalization. The successful candidate will lead high-functioning project teams with representation from all mill disciplines to determine detailed scopes of work and safely deliver the final installation that meets mill equipment standards within the MPR Mission Zero safety management system. This will require the extensive management of 3rd party project delivery support, including engineering and construction management personnel, equipment vendors and field construction teams. As such, the MPR Project Manager must be capable and adept at developing high-quality project documentation to generate meaningful and executable project delivery contracts.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Uphold all expectations and performance to Mercer’s Visions and Values and support the continual Mission Zero journey, placing safety as your #1 priority.
  • Adhere to all applicable site and corporate best practices, policies, and procedures, including key processes such as Management of Change (MOC), Problem-Solving Design Making (PSDM), Risk Assessment Matrix (RAM) and Integrity Management System (IMS)
  • Leading or actively participating in incident investigations and the adherence of corrective actions to developing permanent solutions and ensuring your assigned tasks are completed in an acceptable time frame
  • Develop projects identified in the LTP and deliver capital projects identified in the annual capital plan
  • Co-ordinate and drive project best practices
  • Develop, engage, and lead high-performance project teams comprised of all the affected project stakeholders who are active participants in the full lifecycle of the project
  • Lead the development of projects to ensure the expected results are well-defined and measurable
  • Implementing capital projects, including all tasks to manage the project during its full life cycle; setting project goals, scope development, budgeting and estimating, cash flow forecasts and monthly financial and update reporting, scheduling, development of Request for Proposals and Request for Quotations, coordinate engineering detailed designs, vendor selection, contract management, cost control, commissioning and start-up, and training/integration with mill systems and team members to ensure the successful turnover of projects to the equipment landlords and stakeholder departments.
  • Ensure the design of new assets delivers the best value to MPR through alignment with site standards for safety, reliability and maintenance best practices.
  • Develop on-site project approval documents to support the project schedules and spending
  • Support the development of project approval documents for the Board of Directors (BOD)
  • Develop and manage project documentation, terms of reference, and project plans.
  • Actively identify risk areas for the project and develop a risk issue register and mitigation strategies.
  • Build effective relationships with key stakeholders and manage the interfaces between operations, maintenance, fabricators, construction, and other engineering disciplines with strong communication plans.
  • Construction management of projects as necessary
  • Lead the audit and evaluation of project results to determine actual project benefits
  • Support compliance and reporting activities as they relate to external and internal financial auditing (i.e. SOX compliance) and grant funding.
  • DATS compliance
  • Additional duties as required.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Completed High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Post-secondary education in a relevant Mechanical or Electrical discipline (Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technologist, or similar technical field), with minimum 5 years of industrial experience; PMP designation is considered a major asset.
  • Self-starter, proactive, and passionate team player.
  • Demonstrated relationship management skills, including the ability to establish and maintain a high level of trust and confidence with key stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including setting purposeful meeting agendas and chairing meetings.
  • Ability to effectively manage time and prioritize tasks while meeting tight deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience using formal project management methodology.
  • Experience using formal decision-making and evaluation tools and processes, i.e. Kepner-Trego PSDM or similar.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various construction and fabrication codes, standards and practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industrial equipment, including pressure piping and vessels, pumps, reducers, conveyors and pulp mill mechanical equipment.
  • Experience working with MS Office / MS Project, CMMS and Google Suite of Applications.
  • Experience working in a Pulp Mill or similar industrial facility will be considered an asset.
