What our Department is Responsible for:
The Operations Engineering department at FortisAlberta is divided into two main sub-departments: Protection and Control, and Power Quality. Our key responsibilities include:
  • Establishing Protection and Control/Power Quality Standards, Guidelines, and Philosophy.
  • Managing Protective Device Equipment and Setting Templates.
  • Conducting Power Systems Analysis.
  • Monitoring, Investigating, and Reporting on Power Quality.
  • Manage FortisAlberta’s Wildfire Mitigation Program
  • Establishing Equipment Commissioning Standards and Providing Field Support.
  • Researching Best Engineering Practices.
  • And more...
We have a broad scope, interfacing with all engineering departments within FortisAlberta. This position falls within the Protection and Control department.

What Expertise are we Looking for:
Candidates with any of the following expertise are strongly encouraged to apply.
Power System Analysis (CYME): FortisAlberta uses CYME. Experience in conducting (phasor domain) short circuit studies, load flow studies, DER impact assessments, and long-term dynamics is desirable.
Protection & Control (P&C): Experience developing and maintaining P&C standards and philosophy, creating relay settings/templates, upholding protective equipment standards, and supporting various protective engineering assessments.
Power Quality: Experience in investigating and troubleshooting power quality-related issues including harmonics, power-related customer complaints, rapid voltage change investigations, and familiarity with power quality standards.
Commissioning: Experience with commissioning field equipment like relays, reclosers, regulators, etc. This includes developing commissioning plans, documenting results, and maintaining field device information.
Distribution Planning: Expertise in distribution planning which involves specifying system upgrades, performing load forecasting, high-level planning studies, and developing scopes for planned projects.
Distribution Standards / Design: Expertise in distribution design standards and/or asset maintenance. This entails overhead / underground standards, equipment standards, specifying pole infrastructure, required equipment, and conductor stringing. Moving projects from planning to execution, which includes permitting and engaging with various stakeholders, is also desirable.
Power Systems Research: Conducting research on power systems to ascertain impacts of emerging technologies. This also involves analyzing existing utility practices, suggesting improvements, and collaborating with external research entities to identify best practices and evaluate potential programs.

What you will be Responsible for:
The Power Systems/Distribution/Electrical Engineer will:
  • Research & Development: Drive innovation in the power and distribution sector, focusing on the design, development, and optimization of advanced protection devices, wildfire mitigation and power systems analysis.
  • Protective Device Management: Craft, evaluate, and refine setting templates for protective devices, ensuring their alignment with established standards and operational efficiency.
  • Commissioning & Testing: Lead the testing and commissioning of protective relays, offering both on-site and remote support, and aid during the commissioning phase of equipment and systems.
  • Technical Support & Assessments: Offer guidance to P&C technologists in coordination studies, grounding analyses, and relay-specific challenges. Conduct detailed assessments covering aspects like load, DER, system evaluations, EV infrastructure, and more.
  • System Design & Automation: Development, design, and/or enhancement of distribution automation (DA) and source transfer mechanisms, emphasizing streamlined power distribution.
  • Standardization & Procedures: Developing, designing, and maintaining standards, processes, and philosophies for P&C, wildfire mitigation, and operations.
  • Data Management & Interpretation: Skillfully analyze and interpret technical and statistical data, applying findings to actionable strategies and improvements.
  • Software Proficiency: Harness various engineering software and office productivity tools, ensuring accurate project design and efficient delivery.
  • Stakeholder & Relationship Management: Cultivate strong relationships with internal teams, external partners, suppliers, and manufacturers, championing collaboration and communication.
  • Problem Solving: Address and resolve technical challenges related to equipment design and operation, upholding the highest standards of service delivery.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Authentication: Validate designs and operations as per industry regulations, the Engineering Act, APEGA, and other external bodies.
  • Wildfire Mitigation & Safety: Lead and manage wildfire mitigation initiatives, placing utmost importance on infrastructure safety and community protection.
  • Adaptability & Initiative: Embrace and lead special projects and other duties as necessary, showcasing commitment to organizational objectives and continuous improvement.

Qualifications we are looking for:
  • Bachelor of Engineering Degree (Electrical) plus a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience is required.
  • Registered with APEGA as a Professional Engineer
  • Those registered as an Engineer-in-Training with APEGA with 3 years of electric distribution system engineering experience may also be considered.
  • Previous experience using technical and graphical software is an asset.
  • Experience working in a regulated environment, preferably within the electrical utility industry, would be an asset.
