School District No. 71 (Comox Valley) DenmanIsland Community School PRINCIPALSHIPEffective August 1, 2024 The Comox Valley School District is seeking aninnovative and dynamic leader to join the Comox Valley leadership team asPrincipal of Denman Island Community School. This role is an excitingopportunity for transformative leadership within a vibrant rural communityschool. Denman Islandis located just off the east coast of Vancouver Island and is situated on theunceded traditional territory of the Pentlach people including the K’omoks,Sliammon and Qualicum First Nations, Denman Island or Taystay’ich. The Island offersa vibrant arts scene, lively events, a beautiful, natural environment with lotsof opportunities for active recreation. HIRING CRITERIA FOR PRINCIPALSHIP Educational Leadership The Board requires principals to have a Master’s Degree or must beenrolled in and working towards completion of a Master’s Degree and a validmembership with the Teacher Regulation Branch of the BC Ministry of Educationand Child Care. Further, preferred candidates for the Denman Islandprincipalship will demonstrate successful school-based leadership andadministration experience, as well as: • a commitment to student-centred approaches, the principles ofinclusive schools, and the practises of Truth and Reconciliation• a consultative approach, involving students, parents, school staff,and the community • appreciation for the community school model and an understandingof the important role that parents and community play within the school • the ability to establish and maintain a positive, caring, andthriving learning environment • a recent record of teaching excellence, including outdoor experientialand place-based learning approaches - a component of this principalship includesa teaching assignment• the ability to inspire staff and facilitate effectiveimplementation of innovative teaching practices• effective problem-solving and conflict management skills, and theability to diffuse crisis situations • collaboration with Parent Advisory Councils and ability tocommunicate and work effectively with community partners• strong organizational and management skills, including financialmanagement• experience working with human resources and labour management • excellent interpersonal, communication, and listening skills • visibility and engagement in all aspects of the school• a commitment to supporting directions of the Board of Educationand implementation of the district’s strategic plan • a commitment to ongoing personal and professional development Ifyou are an exceptional educational leader interested in making a difference forstudents and families within a progressive school district, we would like tohear from you!To apply School District 71 welcomes diverse candidates and encouragesapplications from members of groups experiencing barriers to equity.
