Senior Accountant

Summary

Reporting to the Controller, the Senior Accountant is responsible for performing key operational accounting and finance functions including day-to-day accounting duties, quarterly reporting activities and project-based tasks.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct monthly accounting procedures for fixed assets/IFRS 16 lease assets in terms of depreciation, acquisition and disposition per the established Colas accounting policy.
• Perform monthly inventory valuation, consumption, and reconciliation for the manufacturing division.
• Prepare billing for construction jobs on a timely manner.
• Conduct detailed job costing analysis for construction jobs on a weekly basis to identify any major variances and investigate root cause and communicate with the operation.
• Conduct month end GL analysis and address the major discrepancies to the controller.
• Assist in the bi-annual budget process including uploading the budget to JDE.
• Identify potential opportunities for improvement in existing workflow processes, such as internal reporting to improve accuracy, productivity, and efficiency.
• Assist Controller with monthly, quarterly and year-end review and closing.
• Assist in the quarter-end and year-end audit process and prepare the needed documentation.
• Compile annual BC/SK PST return if needed.
• Provide mentorship to Junior accountant.
• Ad hoc projects and reporting assigned by Controller.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Certifications

• University degree in accounting or accounting diploma plus 6+ years of progressive accounting working experience.
• CPA Designation or working towards

Work Experience

• Accounting experience in manufacturing or construction industries preferred.

Technical Skills

• Knowledge of accounting principles and procedures in IFRS
• Excel skills (vlookups/index match, sumifs, what-if analysis, Power Query)
• Attention to detail, accuracy, confidentiality, and ethics
• Motivated, positive, and professional
• Willingness for learning new skills to improve efficiency
• Excellent mindset for continuous improvement
• Experience with JDE, JWS, Reportsnow and Onbase is an asset
• Ability to work overtime occasionally during month end
