About this opportunity:

Cenovus Energy is looking for a Senior Manager, External Reporting who will be responsible for the direction and oversight of activities related to the preparation of the quarterly consolidated financial statements, management's discussion and analysis (MD&A), supplemental information, the annual consolidated financial statements and annual information form in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and continuous disclosure requirements. Partnering with the upstream, downstream and commercial accounting and finance teams to deliver clear and insightful financial reporting and analysis will be a key attribute for this individual.

This role requires a high level of technical and professional skills and a proven track record to lead with authority, direction and influence and communicate effectively across business functions and with upper management. This is an ideal opportunity for a CPA who is well versed in financial reporting under IFRS for public companies.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and strategic direction to the External Reporting team through effective coaching, supervision and mentoring.

  • As a member of the management team, promote opportunities for training and professional development, including cross-training through goal setting and support.

  • Partner with the upstream, downstream and commercial accounting teams to deliver accurate and timely financial statements, managements' discussion and analysis and supplemental information, and the annual information form providing transparent and insightful financial reporting and analysis.

  • Review other quarterly documents (News Release and Q&A) for accuracy and consistency in messaging.

  • Oversee the preparation of the XBRL tagging.

  • Work closely with Accounting Research and Legal to resolve any reporting and disclosure matters on a timely basis, including changes to IFRS and National Instruments.

  • Oversee the preparation of ad hoc regulatory reporting requirements (e.g. Alberta Energy Regulator).

  • Steward the identification and implementation of process improvements.

  • Ensure adequate internal controls over financial reporting are in place.

  • Support the Manager, Legal Entity Reporting with the preparation of legal entity financial statements, multiple group consolidations and ad hoc solvency tests.

  • Contribute the financial reporting perspective to initiatives within Finance and other departments.

Qualifications:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

  • Completion of a University undergraduate degree preferably in Accounting, Business or Finance.

  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is required.

  • Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in an accounting/finance related environment.

  • Excellent knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards and Continuous Disclosure requirements for publicly traded companies.

  • Strong understanding of the oil and gas industry and internal controls over financial reporting.

  • Minimum 5 years' experience leading and coaching staff.

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to work in a time-constrained environment.

  • Excellent business writing and oral communication skills.
