Shelter Worker – Overnight
Monday to Thursday - 11:30 pm - 8:30 am (36 hours)
Rate of Pay: $22.50 per hour
Reports to: Shelter Manager and Shelter Supervisor
Inn From the Cold (IFTC) meets the needs of people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless in York Region. We work with the community and collaborate with our partners in supporting those with basic to complex needs. IFTC’s work is housing focused and trauma informed, offering a continuum of services and programs that allow us to partner with our clients on their journeys out of homelessness. JOB SUMMARY
The overnight Shelter Worker is an awake position.
This position is responsible for:
- Ensuring the safety and well-being of clients
- Informal counselling, crisis prevention and intervention
- Client intakes and transfers
- Ensuring the smooth operation of the shelter program
ADMINISTRATIVE/COMMUNICATION
- Data entry (HIFIS), shift report, incident reports
- Shift exchange debriefing
- Participate in a minimum of 3 paid staff meeting per contract period
- Participate in one-on-one supervision meetings bi-monthly and an end of contract performance review with the shelter manager
HEALTH AND SAFETY
- Ensuring that all Health & Safety, psychological wellness and IPAC guidelines are followed as per IFTC policies
- Reporting to the Shelter Manager and Shelter Supervisor any relevant health and safety concerns
HOUSEKEEPING
- Preparing the kitchen for the volunteers to cook breakfast
- Slice bread as required
- Ensuring that all checklists are completed
EDUCATION & PRIOR WORK EXPERIENCE
- Diploma in social service worker program, community worker program, youth worker program or university degree in a relevant discipline or other relevant human services field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
ABILITIES & SKILLS
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbally.
- Demonstration of advanced interpersonal skills specific to the role including de-briefing, active listening, conflict resolution and problem solving.
- Demonstrated ability to participate and contribute in a team environment with an inclusive and collaborative approach.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision and act with a high degree of independent judgement, taking action on a variety of matters as required.
- Ability to provide and receive constructive feedback
- Demonstrated commitment to continual learning in providing services to the homeless
- Knowledge and understanding of the issues of homelessness.
- Proven ability to work in a stressful and changing work environment.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
- Ability to report activities and data in an efficient manner.
- Vulnerable sector screening prior to commencing work
- Food Handling certificate prior to commencing work is an asset
- Level 1 Occupational First Aid and CPR Certificate required prior to commencing work
- Non-violent Crisis Intervention training is an asset
- Proof of full Covid-19 vaccination prior to commencing work
- The candidate may be expected to work in one congregate setting for the duration of the contract.
