The Environmental Protection Division works to protect human and environmental health. The Air Quality Assessments and Stewardship Unit is a part of the Air Quality Assessments and Monitoring Section within the Environmental Monitoring and Analysis Branch. Air Quality Assessments and Monitoring Section staff work to improve Air Quality through monitoring, assessment of Air Quality impacts, and technical support and guidance of Air Quality stewardship initiatives.
The Senior Air Quality Meteorologist in the Environmental Monitoring and Analysis Branch leads provision of Air Quality environmental impact assessment (EIA) support to legislated statutory decision makers for Environmental Management Act authorizations and Environmental Assessment Act reviews. This position oversees the planning, design, implementation and assessment of Air Quality monitoring programs for EIA studies, including recommendations for selection and siting of meteorological equipment and Air Quality monitoring instrumentation. Other responsibilities include: providing impact assessment support for enforcement activities under the Environmental Management Act, maintaining knowledge of current research in the field, overseeing junior staff, and preparation, negotiation and management of contracts and transfer agreements. This position also oversees and leads Air Quality monitoring projects and impact assessment studies for Air Quality management, in coordination with other provincial, federal and local government agencies. This position is both a Branch specialist in atmospheric science and Air Quality meteorology, and either Air Quality dispersion modelling or statistical/computer programming, related to innovations in Air Quality assessment and reporting. This position provides recommendations and guidance on monitoring, mitigative and remedial activities to reduce the impact of Air Quality on human health and the environment. The position represents the Ministry; working at all levels of government, industry, land users, members of the public and the media, to lead education and awareness and promote environmental stewardship, and leads provision of technical guidance to airshed management planning initiatives.
Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science in a related discipline such as atmospheric science or Air Quality meteorology and seven (7) years relevant experience*; which includes; OR two (2) years' experience in Air Quality management; or a combination of education and experience; OR
  • Master of Science Degree in a related field discipline such as atmospheric science or Air Quality meteorology and five (5) years related experience*; OR
  • PhD in a related field discipline such as atmospheric science or Air Quality meteorology and three (3) years directly related experience*; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and training may be considered.

*Related Experience must include all of the following:
  • Experience in developing technical solutions to complicated Air Quality problems or questions.
  • Advanced knowledge of air pollution meteorology, Air Quality modelling, Air Quality epidemiology and statistical analysis of Air Quality data.
  • Experience in Air Quality dispersion modeling and evaluation of modeling results and uncertainties.
  • Experience in the development of advanced Air Quality data analysis tools, techniques or methodologies to support Air Quality permitting.
